Old Sony was good. I remember the 8x / 10x / 12x range of burners were top notch. I loved my little 8x.... but then I moved up to a LiteOn 24x and haven't looked back.

I wasnt. I was commenting on an article I read somewhere (might of been over at cdfreaks.com) that sony were using Liteon drives for their 32x products.

Its a common market practise. A company will rebadge their drives. Example- Asus* have a dvd drive out. Its actually a Pioneer** manufactured drive, just with a faceplate with Asus written on it.

My mate has a 12x sony. Does everything mine can except write at 24x and do EMF. (req. for SD2)
Top drives they are. Pity they dropped the ball with their newer models. :(

*= company names used for example purposes only.
**= Most common drive that gets 're-badged', especially their DVD drives.

Yes, another good example is AOpen CD-RW drives. They are simply rebadged Ricoh drives with different firmware. The different firmware can make all the difference when it comes to successfully duplicating a copy-protected CD.

I've noticed that the Iomega drives are now liteons, they didn't even bother to change the writing on the front panel - just added their logo.

    I have 2 Sony CD-RW's. A 16x/ 10x/ 40x and a 24x/ 10x/ 40x.

Both do a great job but then again, I have always used Sony CD Roms and have never had one break yet. :thumb:
