Well, not much done in the last week or so. I did get to thinking about some of the responses here regarding networking to the shed. I've been having networking problems even within the house, such as: All my computers share a DSL connection no problem, but they can't share a network. Hell, they can't even ping one another. I think it's perhaps the result of buying the cheapest possible router we could find. :o I was thinking I may have to get a better and more configurable unit, and while shopping discovered that most of the wireless routers have a built-in 4 port router....using the much cheaper cat5 cables for the computers already next to one another. Now, if I were to get one of these routers (I promise not to buy the absolute cheapest one!) what else would I need on the shop end of things to again use a standard cat5 switch to connect another group of computers? Does the main router need to be a WAP? The cost of the router is one thing, and I can afford that. The cost of wireless PCI cards for every computer I have, and every new computer I add to the farm is the costly part, as they run about $30/ea  If I can just bridge the gap between the shop and the house wirelessly, I can probably justify a new router. Any help with this?

Oh, and the trenching will still be done, but not until my friend that owns a trencher gets freed up. I talked to him and he wants to do a trade. :D I'll still need the trench for permanent power, telephone and water out to the shed.

    Thanks Wiggo!
Well, I think I have the wireless solution now. I am going to replace the router with a wireless one that will allow me to still connect to the wired network already in place. In the shop, I'll have an ethernet bridge that will hook up to an 8-port switch. I can add switches as I expand the shop. It's also possible to just use a computer out in the shop as a gateway, adding a wireless PCI or USB LAN card to it, then another ethernet card to a switch, but if it ever goes down, the network goes down. Also, the ethernet bridge allows me more placement options which I've read can be important for wireless signal. Netgear is the brand I was looking at, unless I hear from someone here against.
