EAC & LAME. (EAC for extracting audio, LAME for encoding)
The dozens of DVD ripping & DivX encoding tools. Impossible to name just one, as one tool only does a specific task in order to acheive a major task.

    Trillian
    Nero & CloneCD

I think Lavasoft's "Ad-Aware" should be a global 'Essential program' for all users on this planet. Beings from other planets should be happy their govt & software designers arent money hungry scumbags intent on invading our privacy.

Ad-aware is cool. Recently added that to my tool box.
Most used: ZoneAlarm & AoE Conquerors. Although I am racking up some mileage on Civ3
