wow....this was so cool I had to share it. First off I know how powerful lightning is and how dangerous it is. And yet how fasinating it is all at the same time. Yet I had no idea it was capable of such things. Usually when a lightning storm hits I'm the first to unplug the computer for the AC and the network. I'm very paronoid person over just about anything. Anyway today for some unusual reason I decided to stay on my computer. Now here in florida there is a tropical storm floating over us and there are some lightning storms thrown over by us becuase of it. I'm sitting there on my computer after I got home from school and seeing lightning come in through my window blindes. There was one really bright flash and while it was flashing I could have sworn I saw the "bolt?" in my room. Anyway as it flickered I noticed 3 zig zaggy lines on my monitor screen in a horizontal and diagnonal pattern. The lightning went away and so did the lines. Then it happened again except this time it was more then 3 lines it was about 5 maybe 7? I don't know. Then about 5 minutes later the lightning GOT REALLY BAD!!! So bad that when it flickered my monitor decided to degauss itself. I was like WOH!!!! I had no idea it can do such a thing. I quickly got my hands off the keyboard on put them over my mouth that was when my monitor degaused again!!!! It went through the whole pattern of degausing too. You know rainbow colors and screen shifting to the side and making that DOOF noise too. Then the thunder attacked me and the walls in my room rattled my dad's car alarm went off and computer off for me. I hope no damage was done to my hardware. heh had to share that. :D

I heard of a case at Launceston College a LONG time ago:
They were running coax across the roof, lightning hit the cable and litraly blew the tops off about 10 computers (and melted the inards) before the power was dissapated enought to not kill any more.

so if there was that much static electricity in the air then there is a good chance allot of yer ICs in yer puter are damaged, but they could work fine for months before they fail, or they may work forever. thats why its good to have a full grounded case so it acts as a faraday cage, thats one way windows are bad

Well my case isn't grounded other then the fact that its plugged into a 3 prong connector into a 3 prong in the wall

My neightbor once had lightning hit a tree in his back yard. TALL TREES. The branch literally blew up and fell down toward the roof. Through the roof through the attack and through the cieling. And it just hung there in the cieling. Right over the parents bedroom. I remember that like it was yesterday

i'm not even going to count the grammatical and spelling errors in this thread.

not even BIG BLUE could do that...

is it just me, or has anyone else noticed the serious LACK of spelling and grammar that people use when online these days?

i can't believe that it's just from that many people don't know the language, if you can write it at all, then you've gone through school to learn it and knowing the difference between "attack" (to use an example) and "attic" should be fairly obvious
