Just to put the fire conditions into perspective....and what those poor buggers in Victoria are now going thru....

The fire authorities have an index based on air temp, humidity, wind speed, fuel dryness and some other factors they use to calculate the risk of fire...they generate the "index" based on the combination of these factors.

The fire weather warning index for a normal "High Fire Danger" day is 39........
Ash Wednesday when so many lives were lost in Victoria (over 70) about 20 years ago the index was 104.....
the day the firestorm that hit Canberra the index was 124 and
yesterday in Canberra it was 139...higher still in Victoria......
