Well I hate to admit it, but you dragged it out of me:D

I have cut through the insulation myself -- more like torn through it, while seperating strips of conductors.
As long as you don't actually cut the strands of wiring themselves, I just wrap it in a tiny piece of electrical tape. Just a little added insurance against 2 such bare spots meeting.
Then I go ahead and heat shrink the whole thing as normal.

I have had no data loss myself - the key is -- it is only a bare conductor not a damaged conductor.

You might actually be able to get away with nicking one of the tiny strands, but any actual damage to the conductor opens the opportunity for an interrupted flow.

I was gonna reply to Loopy until I realized that there was another page of positngs:) Charles nailed it, so I won't bother repeating it.

Charles, where did you get shrink to go over your cable? I just used colorfull vinyl tape to hold everything together.

A local electrical supply house. 5/8" shrink tubing is available in 3' sections for about $1.89. Quite difficult to work over the connector actually, but with some patience do-able.
Only available in basic rubber colored black though - not to colorful. The finished product really doesn't have the proffessional store bought appearance, but it's good enough for the girls I go out with:p

FiReBLaZR - Congratulations on your "contract" with ColdOC
Looking forward to that, I'm sure all of us are. Best to you!:thumb:

That's good to hear that the project is progressing well at the planning stage. ;)
Oh btw a lot of ppl use the fold and cable tie trick when roundin' ATA66/100 cables so as not to have to worry about cuttin' one of those fine wires (worked for me). ;)

Glad to oblige Loopy - let us know how it turns out.

I recently read a review where a guy did HDD benchmarks using home-made rounded cables vs. a couple different store-bought rounded cables vs. traditional ribbon cable. All were IDE ATA 66.

He got exactly the same results in all tests!!

If I could just remember where I saw it, I could post a link :?:
