assuming your case has adequate cooling...all you'll proabably need is a thermaltake volcano 7+ or 11+ and a tube of arctic silver III

that greatly depends on what else you have in your system.
    overclocking is an artform...and a science ;)

just go slow, bump it up a little at a time, run benchmarks, make sure it's stable and push it a little bit more

if you're real lucky and have a good batch of silicon in that cpu you might be able to brake 2 ghz with that setup

you've got enough extra bandwith in you're ram that it shouldn't be a prblem and that mobo has good OC options...sometimes PCI cards such as NICs can create problems with high end OC, but since that mobo has most of your necessities on-board it shouldn't be a problem

does your 2400+ have a 166 mhz fsb or a 133 mhz fsb?

if you're mobo doesn't support 166, that could be the problem...it's running at 133

    i've got a

    Gigabyte GA-7AVXP

so i'm pretty sure is not the mother board fault.

If the thermal past wasn't applied properly would it dectect it as a lower Mhz so that it doesn't burn out???

all mobo's have a default settings for the fsb whether it is a jumper, in the bios, or both...make sure your's is set to the correct fsb

and no, you're thermal goop shouldn't make a difference, if it was getting too hot is would shut down, not constently run at a lower speed

just take a peek in the bios to see what fsb you are running at...and check the multiplier while you're at it
