Thread: Cooling Fan Options

    I've been contemplating making a scoop on top of my P4 CPU, to draw the air from the sides of the HS up thru a 120mm fan in my window, and making the HSF blow that direction as well. Any thoughts?

    Or could I just flip the HSF direction, and place my 120 fan in the window sucking the air out the case?

    I'm just thinking, then most of the heat doesn't just linger in the case. :?: I know it's not a totally new idea, but just wondering what you guys thought.:shrug:

    it totally depends, but i guess i would use it where the case fan is an exaust, but only if your HSF is good enough to get the "pull there" i hope you know what i mean

    Supprisingly enough in an older Gateway system (PII) I had the power supply had a similar shroud over the proc and was pulling air out that way! :D But like toobox stated you will need to be sure the air is getting under there for a positive draw. YOu wcould possibly need to "overpressure" your case to make sure.

    What ya plannin' may work but a lot of heatsinks don't work as well when their airflow is reversed.

    LoL, i bet there is someone stupid enough to put on two fans on the heatsink one intake and one exhaust, think about, air goes in then gets pushed out before even touching the heatsink :P

    Hope I'm not too late :woot:
    Here are some astute observations on double-fan set-ups that I gleaned from another forum.It is simpler just to copy the relevant bits and let you pick the bones out that you want:-
    "There are two ways to increase flow through a fan. The first is to run it at higher speed. The second is to increase the static pressure at it's intake. Double fans seek to use the second method. The first fan increases the inlet pressure at the second fan. The fans must have sufficient separation and a flow-straightening device. If an 80mm fan feeds a 60mm fan,the airflow through the 60mm will exceed that for the 60mm fan used alone, BUT will not exceed that for the 80mm used alone feeding an 80 to 60mm funnel. Adding a larger,or faster,fan to feed an existing fan will reduce temperature,but no better than using the extra fan with an adapter in place of the original fan."
    It is best to have more (filtered) inlet airflow than outlet,in order to pressurize the case to avoid unfiltered air getting sucked in through the many little openings and cracks.
    Taking that lot into consideration,I would suggest taking bits from both of your sketches - fitting your 120mm fan with a shroud which is a little larger than,and stops short of, the inlet of your HSF,and using it as an INLET fan, keeping the HSF as a downward-blowing fan,as it and it's HS was designed to operate. This will
    a)provide cool air where it is most needed,instead of sucking already-warmed air past it.
    b) use the heatsink as intended.
    c) help to pressurise the case, instead of the opposite and
    d) the loose fit at shroud/HSF will reduce the chance of stalling the HSF airflow ( which would increase noise,reduce throughput and sabotage cooling ) and provide a cooler environment around the HS which will assist heat transference.

    uh about the double fan thing, someone did a test with 2 deltas, 2 tornados, and 1 tornado/delta with 1 stealth and it showed to increase temp by about 2-7 degrees, which isn't good

    Hi,Toolbox!

    That clever chap did say that the second fan should be specifically designed (blade profile,speed etc.) to handle the air from the first fan - like in a jet engine, or else the fans should be separated sufficiently far apart with a flow-strightening device.

    Seems to me that the fans you mention might be too close-coupled,the air between turbulent and the second fan's blades stalled - whizzing around but not actually passing much air. Picture an "enthusiastic" crowd beseiging a football pitch turnstile - the few who succeed are all "walking wounded"!
