America's Army is a full game, but it's played online so hopefully you have a good connection. Halo also has a demo available. Check out 3Dgamers.com for a whole slew of downloadable demos and such.

I second the vote for America's Army - it's fantastic and free.

However version 2.0 is due to be released any day now, so don't download the 600MB+ Version 1.9...wait until 2.0 is out then download the full version.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory was released to the public over the internet as well. A nice little FPS, that isn't as realistic as America's Army, and is still good fun.

now how did I forget about that one? : omg:

I've even got a little shortcut, right down here....
personally, I like RTCW: Enemy Territory better than America's Army :)

If you want something to test out how well your machine runs theres the Gunmetal demo, Lock On Modern Air Combat demo, Call of Duty demo and you could always try the BF1942 demo and alter the videodefault.con so the polygon decay is minimal etc and use FSAA. looks sweet after some tweaking.
