I wouldent know as I havent played it on anyhting but A64's, but at a quick glance it looks like it could run it fairly well at lower levels untill you get that 9600 and the extra RAM.

A freind of mine has a ATI Radeon 9200 256mb PCI GPU and a Intel Pentuim 1GHz CPU (which is way worse then yours) and according to him it runs fine. So it will run, but not that good. You may want to read some tweaking guides especially for HL2 so it runs the best it can on that system.

Ye hl2 will work on that pc of yours but as sed b4 it will not run all that well but will run so if u were goin to upgrade anything on there tho i suggest getting another 256mb ddr that will help it out a bit and make sure you have latest nvidia drivers too or u culd also get a better graphics card......an fx5700 256mb will run that on high settings along with 512mb ram and that cpu u have i believe.

There are much better options than an FX5700, but I'd agree that basically some more RAM and a new video card would be nice. That said, it should run fine at 800x600 on DX8 settings.

Yes there are better cards out there than the fx5700 but if he doesnt want to go spending much than a fx5700 would be ideal realy as they are cheap and are pretty good be sure to get the 256mb one tho.

Frankly, given the GeforceFX's poor performance in HL2, i would go with a radeon 9600

The geforce FX5700 performs well in hl2 as i played it on a previous system the spec was

    AMD athlon xp 3200+
    512mb ddr400
    FX5700
    ASUS a7n8x-e deluxe motherboard

Ran it with all settings on full and it ran without fault so realy i dont understand what u mean by its poor performance as i have had no problems with it on hl2.

A 9600 would still be a better option then the FX series.

That may be soo but it all depends on what type he preferes realy like ATI or NVIDIA and what prices he is willing to pay.
