Default P35 DS3R Rev. 2.1 will not boot with IDE HD

    Hi guys,

First of all I am dutch, so tell me if my english is a problem here.
I have built my own computer a couple of days ago. The system is:

    Case: CM 690
    CPU: Intel E8400
    GPU: 8800 GT
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R Rev. 2.1 Bios version F9
    HD's: 2 Samsung Spinpoints 500 GB in RAID 0
1 old IDE HD Western Digital 250 GB

With two SATA disks everything works perfectly fine. But I want to attach my old HD (temporary) to copie the data to my new HD's. I've tried everything but as soon as I plug it in it won't boot anymore. So no POST screen. Thus the bios isn't an option. If I unplug the power (IDE cable still attached) everything works fine again.
In the bios IDE devises are AUTO detected. I tried master and slave jumper settings. As well as in the middle and at the and of the IDE cable.
I hope this is clear for you all.
I think I have to do some more in bios to make it work. Any help?

    Thanks!
    Sissss

Unplug your CD drive from the cable and have the IDE drive only on there

So you are having issues with trying to only connect the IDE drive on the cable and transfer data? Are you sure it is a good drive? Are you sure the cable is good?

Have you tried manually setting it to the drive name, and LBA choice? Have you tried CS (Cable Select) and putting the drive on the end of the cable?

Yes, I had only one drive. I am using Win2K

    The latest news is:

    1) I managed to boot with a CD Rom drive on the IDE cable.

    2) I managed to boot successfully with an IDE disk on the cable! I did this as follows:

My system is set to boot from the SATA drive.

    a) Went into the BIOS and disabled the the IDE drives.
    b) Connected the disk
    c) Booted up.
    d) Restarted and went into BIOS. Here I enabled the the IDE drives again
    e) I saved the changes.
    f) I exited the BIOS
    g) After a long wait, my operating sytem started. Subsequent restarts were much faster.

This was with a "simple" IDE drive. By simple I mean very few jumper settings. I think I ended up with cable select.

My other IDE drive has an amazing combination of jumpers. I eventually go this to be recognised as well. I did this by replacing teh "simple" drive and then:
    a) restarting
    b) When I had no boot, stopping and adjusting jumpers.
    c) Finally downloading the latest drivers and making sure that I installed the IDE driver option for the Gigabyte SAT driver and not the SCSI. That seems to work after a fashion. I am hoping that if I get a better set of jumper combinations (there are up to three jumpers on this drive!) it might work better still...

Well, my IDE disk has 16 different jumper combinations... I've just looked the device using the Maxtor program Maxblast 4. I follwed up by looking at the Hitachi web site (http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/d120gxp/d120gxpjum.htm if you are interested!). I think I can sort this out, now I've seen the website.

As for Win 2K, I have a dual booot to XP, but I would have to reload lots of programs and I know my way round Win 2K, tolerably well. Doubtless the time will come...

    Thanks for your interest.

WOW, that is a lot of jumper configurations!

XP is pretty easy to learn, and very similar to W2K, you should make the jump you will not regret it
