    Default New to Gigabyte

    Hi, all

Finally found this forum, maybe Gigabyte could advertise it on their website? I just bought a GA-X48-DS4 and I'm wondering if there is a post here about overclock settings. I am familiar with Asus, but not Gigabyte. Specifically the board seems to virtually oc itself, but with high vCore. Some of the manual settings are new to me. I love this board and I'm glad to be here!

    Any help is appreciated!

Did you read the sticky I pinned? If not have a gander at it for a while and then if you want I can post some suggestions to you if you post your desired overclock and what you are trying now that is failing.

You should see this though >>

Thanks for the replies and links! I'll go through them. About the RAM; I bought it specifically for the Asus P5N-D which never did successfully POST. It works great right now, but I'll keep an eye on it.

    Talking Re: New to Gigabyte

    Thanks for help!

Q6600 is running at 3.0GHz, RAM is 1:1 at 667MHz. Perfectly stable running Prime95.

RAM timings are 4-4-4-12-2T (spec) and voltage is set to "normal", reported as 1.88v in BIOS.

Q6600 vCore is set at 1.3125v, reported lower than that by CPU-Z. CoreTemp shows core 0 at 42c while idle, others are lower. Fully stressed core 0 remains <63c, the rest in the mid to high 50's. Ambient temps are in the mid 80's, I don't have AC.

I am able to get a stable OC at 3.2GHz with similar settings but temps are, of course, somewhat higher although perfectly acceptable. 3.0 appears to be right at the point where temps really take off, at least with my PSU, case cooling, etc...

Truth be told, I don't need the 3.0 I've got, but having spent the money...

You could use a lower mutli and higher FSB thus enabling your ram to run at 800 instead of 667 such as 8x400FSB then you would have 3.2 and 800MHZ ram.

But of course your temps may be higher then you like at 3.2. What cooler are you using?

Followed your advice and loaded Real Temp instead of Core Temp. Core 0 min-max reported as 36-57 now.

I'll try the multi adjust as suggested; about how high can I comfortably go with vCore? Or should I be looking more at temps rather than voltage?

    Thanks!

Well be sure you read the calibration page for RealTemp, and use 105 as your TJmax, it is on 95 by default for 45nm CPU's because that is why it was created. So CoreTemp will/should be very close to the same temp as realtemp once you set TJMax as 105 in it. Here is the calibration page >>>
    Real Temp - Documentation

Well Voltage max is 1.5 so most go by 1.45 as a High area with 1.5+ being the higher end of where users will go. The Q6600 can run within Intel Specs up to 1.5v, but you have to watch temps >>>
    IntelĀ® Coreā„¢2 Quad Processor Q6600 - SLACR

You also need to find out if you have G0 Stepping, if not then you may get hotter then normal quickly with a B3 stepping one

I ran my 65nm Xeon 3075 (E6750) cpu at 1.425 for a mild overclock to 3.4. 1.45-1.50 isnt bad at all unless you are using stock cooling. Which you never answered, that will be the deciding factor, better cooling will allow you to get a higher overclock usually with less volts. And would also allow you to use higher voltages in general.

Temp and Voltage are directly related in that sense

Sorry 'bout that! I'm using a Zalman CNPS9500, Arctic Silver 5 applied as per their instruction page (sparingly!). I changed my sig to show the CPU better; I do have the G0 version.

Thanks for the additional info, I'll be calibrating/testing again today!
