Default Problem installing Vista on GA-EX38-DS4

Hi. I have a strange problem installing vista on my ex38-ds4 board. It is like this:

When having my Samsung Spinpoint 250Gb SATA2 drive connected to either SATA port 0, 1, 2, or 3 the windows setup program takes ages (3-5minutes) to initialize and find the HDD, and after the expanding files operation is done and the computer reboots for the first time it gets stuck after "Verifying dmi....." and canīt find the HDD at all.

I have tried changing setting in BIOS relating to SATA setting with no luck (SATA RAID/AHCI MODE DISABLED, SATA PORT 0-3 NATIVE MODE both ENABLED and DISABLED with same result).

The only way to successfully install Vista is to have my HDD connected to SATA port 4 or 5. Then I dont encounter any of the above mentioned problems.

(windows xp installs with no problem when hdd is connected to port 0-3. I have tried like 4 different vista discs with same result)

And another thing, my HDD is in UDMA5 mode according to vista device manager, shouldnt it be UDMA6?

    My setup is:
    Mobo: GA-EX38-DS4
    Cpu: Intel Core Duo E8400 @ 3.0GHz
    Ram: 2x1Gb Corsair Pc6400 xtreme (4-4-4-12, 2.1V)
    Hdd: 250Gb Samsung Spinpoint SATAII
    DVD: Pioneer Dvr-215 SATA

Anyone have any clue to what might the problem?

    /Tnx in advance

Do you have AHCI enabled? If so you would need to load the driver when installing. As for 0-3 not working and 4-5 are working, have you tested 0-3 with vista installed on 4-5 to see if maybe 0-3 has issues?

See here about UDMA mode and SATA >>>

AHCI has always been disabled, I know about AHCI needing the sata/raid driver to be installed during the windows setup. And yes I have tried switching to port 0-3 after installing vista on port 4,5, no success, vista wont load at all. The bootup process hangs after veryfying dmi, as if I had no HDD installed. Its all very strange.

Well I would say maybe those ports are bad, but you said you installed XP on them so I dunno

Have you tested your storage drive on port0-3 while you have vista loaded and booting off 4 or 5? That is what I meant, just wanted to be sure we meant the same thing in regards to that test

Do you have external USB storage? If not, be sure to disable that, and see if that helps

And you do, when trying on port0-3 have that specific disk marked as the first boot device right? Just checking

Yeah XP installs properly on all sata ports, I tried that cuz I was getting desperate to get my computer up and running before I found out that vista would install on port 4 and 5. Right now I boot from my 250gb samsung on port 5 with vista and I have another samsung 160gb on port 3 which works correctly, I just cant make vista boot up when plugged into port 0-3.

And yes I do have an external firewire HDD but it was not connected when I tried installing vista, none of the other discs were connected at that time (to rule out possible reasons for failure).

Yup it was marked as first boot device since I only had one disc plugged in at the moment :)

Have you since tried to install it again with Legacy USB storage detect disabled in the BIOS and the firewire drive not connected? Just tossing out Ideas as I have never seen this error before

Does the drive have a jumper on it? If so, remove that and see if it helps. Should be removed anyway if there is one because it limits the drive to SATA I

And have you tried it with only one stick of ram? Sometimes that is needed as well when you have install issues, and have you tested this ram on another machine to ensure it was not DOA?

By the way, what settings are you using for your ram? Could also be a issue>>>

Do you have HPET mode on and set to the right one for your vista install IE: 32/64? It is in Power Management Setup

Legacy USB Support has always been disabled and I have never had the external HDD connected when installing OS.

HDD jumpers OFF, never had a jumper at all (HDD delivered jumperless)

    HPET SUPPORT ENABLED
HPET MODE 32-bits (and I use vista x86)

Maybe you should set the subtimmings manually and see if it helps any.

If you dont mind, install memset and run it + post a screenshot so I can see what Auto is giving you in windows for those subtimings >>>
