Higher voltage is not the answer always. <<< Just had to say that.

I do not think you should need 1.4 to run 3.6, but what does that voltage come out to be in Windows at idle/load?

Have you tried lowering or using these in AUTO >>>
CPU Clock Skew Control [normal] 150ps
GMCH Clock Skew Control [Normal] 250ps

Have you tried it with less FSB and MCH voltage (Specs in sig please/thanks)
I forgot 4GB and the switch over...had to look

Hmm those for sure should be working as far as ram timings, that is VERY Loose. Especially with the Static tRead so high

So I think it is your CPU that is not stable for you right now. How is your temps, and what voltages are you showing in CPU-z At idle and load?

And it is not the 8500 does not like anything over 400, you just have to get things set right voltage-wise. And more is not always the answer

I run my E3110 (Same as E8400.. So lesser CPU) at 4.05-4.2 with only 1.32-1.325V, and I have ran it up to 560 FSB with the 8 multi

Not saying that your should only need that little, but just trying to show you that your better CPU should for sure do more then 400-450 FSB with less volts then you are seeming to think you need for 3.6. But it could be all chips are not the same for sure

I would start all over again and try using the 9 CPU multi this time raising things as you need to

phew! was getting a bit lost there i think, dropped some settings and have dropped the volts like you said, checked voltage and cpuz was reading 1.2960v so i have set 1.3v in bios done some stress testing with everest ultimate and have ended up with some stable settings @ :

    Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]
    CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [8]
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [450]
    PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100]
    C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [2.40B]
    Memory Frequency_______1080
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Auto]-----For Now...

    Performance Enhance = [Standard]

    CAS Latency Time________________
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay______
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________

    ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________
    Rank Write to READ Delay________
    Write to Precharge Delay_________
    Refresh to ACT Delay______________
    Read to Precharge Delay__________
    Static tRead Value_______________
    Static tRead Phase Adjust________

    CPU/PCIEX Clock Driving Control [800mV]
    CPU Clock Skew Control [normal]
    GMCH Clock Skew Control [Normal]

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
    DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [+0.2V]
    PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [+0.1V]
    FSB OverVoltage Control___ [+0.1V]
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.1V]

if you see any room for improvement please feel free to say so :P

3.6 gig core temps, both under 100% load never went above 58c, both idle around 44c not to shabby considering, quite pleased with OCZ Vandetta 2 cpu cooler.....

time to start setting the ram timings now, what you reccomend ?....

    So... Are you stable now?

If so, Here is some settings for the CPU speed and Ram Speed you just listed >>>

    Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]
    CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [8]
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [450]
    PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100]
    C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [2.40B]
    Memory Frequency_______1080
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Auto]-----For Now...

    Performance Enhance = [Standard]

    CAS Latency Time________________4/5
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________4/5
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay______4/5
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________12/15

^^ Try 4-4-5-12 first, then 4-4-5-15 if it fails. Then if no luck try 4-5-5-12/15 next and so on till you get stable or have to use 555-15 (Do this with the below settings on AUTO so you can be sure they are not the cause of errors). They should likely do 4-4-5-12/15, I say that because mine do at 900Mhz and they are a lesser model then yours

ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 3-4
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 4-6 (9-11) << try both last
    Write to Precharge Delay_________ 4-6
Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 48-50 (52-62)
    Read to Precharge Delay__________ 3-6
    Static tRead Value_______________ 7-10
Static tRead Phase Adjust________ AUTO <<< Leave in AUTO or Zero or 1-31

    CPU/PCIEX Clock Driving Control [800mV]
    CPU Clock Skew Control [normal]
    GMCH Clock Skew Control [Normal]

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [+0.2V] << Same as below comment
    PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [+0.1V]
    FSB OverVoltage Control___ [+0.1V]
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.1V] << May need .15 or .2 if stability drops quickly as you tighten timings

oh dear , slighlty dissapointing results bud....

can only get memory to run at 5-5-5-12, strange cos i tried 4-5-5-12 and then 4-5-5-15 with ddr2 voltage @ 2.1v and MCH @ 0.2v and still no joy but will run 5-5-5-12 with ddr voltage @ 2.0v and MCH @ 0.1v ?????.......

was hoping for 4-5-5-12 atleast....... ah well , never mind :P

dont get me wrong though im still loving my mushkins !!

Did you change this to manual? >>>
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Auto] <<< Should be manual

Sorry I missed it while editing your table

When you try 455-12 & 455-15 what were your subtimings? That could likely be the cause, only testing bandwidth would show if looser subtimings would be better with tighter CAS. But normally it would be

    Hi LSD,
yeah i notice the typo with the DRAM timing selectable and set it at manual,
whilst trying those settings i has all these set at auto :

ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ auto
Rank Write to READ Delay________ auto
    Write to Precharge Delay_________ auto
    Refresh to ACT Delay______________ auto
    Read to Precharge Delay__________ auto
    Static tRead Value_______________ auto
    Static tRead Phase Adjust________ auto
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.2V]
    DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [+0.3V]
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Manual]
    CAS Latency Time________________4/5
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________4/5
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay______4/5
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________12/15

had no luck so i tried with these setting:

ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 4
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 11
    Write to Precharge Delay_________ 6
    Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 62
    Read to Precharge Delay__________ 6
    Static tRead Value_______________ 10
    Static tRead Phase Adjust________ Auto
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.2V]
    DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [+0.3V]
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Manual]
    CAS Latency Time________________4/5
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________4/5
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay______4/5
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________12/15

and still no luck, soon as i set 5-5-5-12 she runs fine and i can also drop MCH to 0.1v and DDR2 Overvoltage to 0.2v with no probs

    4-5-5-15 wont even boot with MCH @ 0.2v and DDR2 @0.3v...

thanks for your time as always

Ahh, well it looks like you may be as good as it will get.....

    Unless...

You want to or havent tried 5-4-4-12/15

hi all~~im new here..i hav the Gigabyte X-48 DS5. i have updated the bios to Ver 7
but im still beginner of overclocker..can somebody help me?

    Here is my rig setup
    GA-X48-DS5
    Q9550 step x8.5 (multiplier) at 400FSB running at 3.4ghz
    2x2gb G.SKILL DDR2 PC-8800 1100mhz
    OCZ Vedentta2 Cooler
    PC PowerCooling 750w PSU
    Gigabyte HD 4870 (stock)

I just know how to set the FSB and core voltage...How can i adjust those voltage?(beside the cpu voltage) to meet my overclock target which is 3.4? Can any1 provide me a easier template?:S
    please help~

What? You said you know how to adjust, then you ask how to adjust?

So what is it you need help with for now? Please make a new thread with your specs again (So i dont get confused) and I can better help you tonight when I get home with some settings

hi erik, im new to this o/c game to so ill try my best....

do you know that pressing Ctrl and F1 buttons whilst in bios will give you those extra options ?
from what ive learnt you need to get your cpu to where u want it before tuning the ram,
to get required cpu o/c you need to play with these settings:

    CPU Clock Ratio ____________
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________
PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100]---always ways set this at 100
    C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____

try playing with them and watch how it alters other settings, you cant do no harm playing with them unless you press f10 of course which will save those settings and boot into them, if the pc fails to boot, it will try 3 times and then automatically boot into safe settings
always back up your current bios by pressing f11 and reload by pressing f12 if it fails. you can name your bios saves to keep track.

if you read the first couple of pages of this thread you will find the advice that lsd gave me to get a stable cpu o/c

    i hope this helps ? :s

and im sure LSD will chime in soon with his expert advice
