I don't remember exactly how they list it in the Add/Remove programs app, but that sounds like it. DES stands for Dynamic Energy Saver, though it is often listed as Dynamic Energy Saver Advanced. In this case, "advanced" means "retarded".

Well that likely happened because/if you installed them off the disk the program saw no need to update them as it saw they were installed.

Yes, DES is the Energy Saver application (Dynamic Energy Saver)

Interestingly there was an infecton that just so to happen out of the blue and I couldn't clean it effectively, I just did a full XP reinstallation! I ended up installing these stuffs in order: the latest chipset drivers downloaded into my usb, updated XP to SP3 + associated security updates, then NOD32 antivirus, spybot S+D, windows defender, did a thorough scan with no infection, installed graphic drivers, and the whole process took me about 4 hours... no freezes at all.

I then had to install nero for burning the memtest iso... and interestingly, the system hangs at the very beginning of installation of nero 8!! just like how it freezes before i flashed the bios. or just like how it freezes when i installed windows media player 11. i rebooted, and tried again, and same thing happened and the same timing! so i have to dig out my old cd of nero 7, insert it to my dvd drive... praying hard, and the installation went fine without freezing! weird! very weird! i quickly burn memtest onto a cd rom.

while the DIMMs are sitting at 1/3, i removed each of them at one time and ran memtest with no errors. While I am writing now, I am at work and at home the sytem is probably still running the memtest with BOTH DIMMS at 1/3. By the time I get home I will report if it is a normal test or not.

But what is it with this freezes post flashing bios to f7, when they happen at thetime of installing some specific programs?? I haven't retried installing windows media player 11 on this XP installation, I suspect I might get the same response but who knows, but it is weird that each time I tried to install nero 8 it hangs, but with nero 7 it works... what on earth!!!

I haven't done any tweaking with the rams just yet as lsdmeasap suggested to finish testing the ram making sure they are not DOA first... which seems like the case.

While I am learning stuffs during this process, I do need this system to be up and running ASAP, and this prolonging issues with freezes due to unknown reasons is starting to drive me crazy! Each time I thought things were going fine... they weren't!

Nero 6 FTW if you are using XP...... 7 and 8 suck for sure

You can also grab a trial of MagicISO to burn ISO's if you like. Or there is plenty of actual freeware to burn ISO as well, unless you use Nero for other things you may want to look into that

As for your F7 comment, any number of things could be wrong with the BIOS itself. That is why there is often Beta's and updates. Not only to add things in but fix past things that are messed up.

Will your CPU support F6? If so you may want to try that one out

not sure if my e8500 would match with f6... in fact i haven't tried f6. f8 gave me more freezes, and f7 so far is the most stable one, while it still gives me these situational freezes.

i do agree nero 6 is better than any other versions that come after... but the point is, if this is a mobo/ram related issues, how would installing a software causes this type of freeze?? it sounds silly that by having this mobo i am restricted from using some softwares, doesn't it? just that it has never happened to me with my years of using pc, as long as the system requirement of the software matches the system.

i guess my current approach will be, if the memtest goes fine with both DIMMS in situ, I will just try reinstalling windows media player and nero 8 again and see if the freezes still happen... if they do, i will flash bios f6 and then try it again.. if it still freezes... i will try the ram tweak setups as per recommended... all these will probably take out my whole week since i work full time... and if it STILL freezes... then bye bye ep45 ds3l... i am going to return for exchaging an asus p5q. hope that sounds fair (to the ga mobo lol).

    will keep you posted

Yeap, Your CPU will work with F4 and up >>>
    GIGABYTE - Support - Motherboard - CPU Support List - GA-EP45-DS3L (rev. 1.0)

Ya, I would try reinstalling them, I also agree and dont think it was a board/software issue. Likely just a BIOS issue with your last install and most likely you will be fine now with WMP 11 and Nero 8.

You will likely have similar issues switching boards. And no I am not just saying that!

I say it because if you have never built a board, or played in a Real BIOS then you are likely to have to spend some time setting it up properly.

Only OEM PC's/Boards are plug and play. OEM Meaning a Dell, or HP or similar. A good motherboard you will have to setup things, and spend time tweaking them

Sure it will run OK on AUTO but you dont want to use that always one all settings. And you really are more then likely to run into issues then not with things on AUTO. AUTO is made into BIOS's of Good boards so that any user can install almost any hardware and get it to boot to the BIOS. From there Changes should be made on the First boot, most All of them being the ram and CPU setup in the Overclocking section.

Auto just cannot run stable all the time, to many user's hardware variables and other things to take into consideration. Often times it is to much or too little of a choice that Auto uses, so it is OK to boot into the BIOS for a few and make changes, but not to run your PC with for daily use.

Please post me the settings you are using and I will see if I see any issues that are obvious. >>>>

well do as soon as i get home.. still working the shift and won't be back till next morning :S

by the way, i wonder if PSU has anything to do with this? I have a thermaltake 550W, i read that 9800gtx+ is quite power hungry, together with e8500, one ide optical, one sata hd, is the psu going to be sufficient? how do i check how much power my system is consuming?

You will need a Kill-a-watt watt meter it will measure wattage draw from the wall. They are about $30 or so.

What is the 12V Raild spec on that PSU and what is the card req.?

I couldn't understand what it says on the psu... this is how the DC output table looks:

    -------+-------+--------+--------+--------+--------+
    +3.3V | +5V | +12V1 | +12V2 | -12V | +5VSB |
    -------+-------+--------+--------+--------+--------+
    30A | 28A | 14A | 15A | 0.3A | 2A |
    -------+-------+--------+--------+--------+--------+

    AC input: 115V/10A 230V/5A
    Frequency: 50-60Hz
    +3.3V & +5V combined: 140W

    Its a Thermaltake TR2-550NP

    And my card's requirement:
'450-watt power supply or greater with minimum 12V current rating of 24A' with a note saying 'the minimum system power requirement recommnded here is based on a PC configured with an Intel Core 2 Extreme processor (QX6700)'

    Make any sense?
