I just got home and found that my memtest's frozen... apparently it stopped at the 3rd round test. My fiancee told me she checked and found that it passed the first round and said no error, and I told her to just leave it on till the morning. Note: the DIMMs are in bank 1/3.

So I rebooted it obvoiusly, get into windows and tried to get onto tweaktown and make a post... didn't make it to the thread and it freezes.

So I turned the machine off and put them back to single channel 1/2, went back to bios and get the figures to fill in the template, and booted back to windows. Here I am, still writing with no freezes so far. After I post the bios figures I am just going to memtest the single channel setting and see how things go. I suspect it should pass memtest. But its hard to say? Since the dual channel setting did pass memtest for 2 rounds but froze at 3rd round?

What exactly is wrong! I am so puzzled now... can't get my mind straight... the summary sounds like this:

So I got this board EP45-DS3L, initially I installed XP SP2 and updated it with no problesm, have had latest chipset drivers installed with no problem, then it started to freeze with video drivers installed... I flashed bios to f7 and then it works with the video drivers... but still getting random freezes at time.... then I changed from dual channel to single channel... it works until i started to install windows media player 11 and nero 8, it machine freezes on both intialisation of installation... so i ran memtest as suggested, both DIMM ran fine independently, then I tested dual channel, they passed 2 rounds but freezes on 3rd round... then it freezes a lot in XP, which makes me changed back to single channel... and here I am, back to square one!

I am getting more and more confused now.

Without adding or installing anything new, nor changing any settings to the bios (I'm still on f7), as I said before I will do another memtest with the sticks in single channel bank 1/2. I ran memtest => hangs at around 4 minutes. I switched off the machine, took one stick out and left the other one in to test them individually... and now interestingly, BOTH sticks that were tested okay before, now hangs at 1st round test at around 30-35%/3-5 minutes into test....!!

    Whats happening!! Its so odd!!

Well for starters, yes that PSU may not bee good enough. Although the Rails 14 +15 are more then your card requires, 24A, since it is split rails and also used by other components it may just not be enough. If you get a New PSU do not skimp on it, and buy a Single rail'd one they are better for sure

Well I see several issues in your setting again now.

Please first before you go any further look at the sticker on your ram and find the voltage spec, and set your DDR2 Voltage to that. 1.8 is pretty low and if that is the spec I would have to say it is budget ram and just may not be worth this headache to try and get it to work.

I'd suggest Some Mushkins or G.Skills, 2.1V Ram is fine for sure

the sticker says nothing =.= other than the P/N number, S/N number, its logo, some bar code, and its label "1GB UNB PC2-6400 CL5"... i looked through the stick in details, couldn't see anything that ends with a number and "V"....

I have tried again the memtest on bank 3 and 4 individually... non of the sticks pass the test, not even first round... as opposed to yesterday, which I did pass at least 3 rounds for each sticks individually... i dunno what went wrong, coz i didn't flash bios, the settings are the same today as yesterday, no new softwares installed..

okay regardless, I have then put in the settings as per suggested... i ran memtest again and it freezes at 2:14 minutes....

Hmm Did you try the above settings with 2.1V as the voltage? Just wondering, I will see if I can find some info with those numbers you gave above. If you haven't hold on a second I am looking around.

What does CPU-Z show here >>>>

Like I said, and your statement adds to that. I think those are budget rams that may or may not be working properly, and if you can afford ($50ish) some new ram you should get it. 1.8V ram, if that is what it is, normally does not perform very well. And was made a long time ago likely, which also likely would add some incompatibility with your board

I did find this at their site, look like all is 1.8V >>>
    http://usa.apacer.com/us/products/De...DDR2_specs.htm

So if I was you I would only try 1.9 or 2.0. Just so you have a Idea when this ram was manufactured I see posts about it in 2002 so it is pretty dated whether you just bought it or not

I have a very similar problem.

    My build is:

    GA-EP45 DS3L
    E8200
    4 x 1GB Corsair 6400C4 ddr2
    Coolmaster case and 460watt PSU
    3 x sata and 1 x dvd drive
    ati Radeon HD 2600pro video

Every part is brand new. Originally it would post okay and boot. About a week back I noticed that during a restart it would only get as far as listing the ram before rebooting. It would then post okay on the reboot and start.

This has become progressively worse at times with the rebooting occurring multiple times before starting okay. I have run a memory test via a ubuntu live cd but the ram passes with flying colours. I'm starting to think the memory controller may be the culprit.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem? I will probably see if an email to the manufacturer will get a response.

    Regards

What trfc are you using? And what MCH voltages?

Have/can you test the ram one stick at a time in Memtest86+ >>>

Hi Lsd, few questions for you...

    1. Which memory have you found to work best with the GA-P35-DS3L (rev. 2.0)?
I went with Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400's (BL12864AA804) and have had nothing
but problems with them. Chaotic problems showing up with both Memtest and
    Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic.
Sometimes there ARE problems, and sometimes there aren't. Go figure.

    2. Do you know of any issues with the Nvidia 9600 GT cards and this board?

    3. PSU, any recommendations for this board? I am not running much for HW.

I have no intentions of overclocking this machine. I'm not concerned with tweaking
this system at all as this machine is one I put together for my wife.

No, I have not heard of any issues with that card. Why do you ask, have you heard something? If so what did you hear

My PSU Suggestion would be first of all to not skimp out on a PSU it is the single most important piece of hardware in your system.

Having said that, I would suggest that you for sure get a decent quality one with a SINGLE 12V rail that would have enough amps to support your GFX card. Dual rails are over-hyped and have been proven to not perform as originally thought

I would also suggest to get a ATX12V EPS one with a 8 Pin CPU 12v plug. All EPS ones will have this. You can use a normal ATX12V with a 4 Pin plug and be fine as well. It would just be better to get the EPS type since you asked my thoughts on it all.

Hmm, even for the wife I would suggest to not go skimpy. Wattage is not a concern so much as is getting the correct 12V rails for your system since you have a good GFX card in it. The EPS models would not matter so much since you are not overclocking
