    Question EP45-DS4 odd BIOS behaviour !!

    I Have got a EP45-DS4 MoBo with E8500 (3.16GHz CPU and OCZ Reaper HPC 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 1200 (PC2 9600) OCZ2RPR12002GK I managed to make it work the CPU at 3.8GHz with a 400MHz FSB and 666MHz Memory frequency, but despite the fact that there are a lot of alternatives for manual settings in the BIOS, it seems this MoBo "likes" all settings in AUTO. I mean...for example with everything working, if I change only the DRAM Voltage to 2.1v instead of auto the PC does not boot anymore. Also if in the same conditions as before, I set the Standard Timing Control to MANUAL and enter the same timing values reported by MemSet of 5-9-9-30(which the board is actually using) the board does not boot. The same thing happen's if I load the manufacturer especified timing for the memory modules of 5-5-5-18. The only thing I have changed with success from AUTO is the MCH voltage which I incremented 0.1V following LSDASAP advice.┐Could someone from GigaByte or in the forum tell me why this (to me) ODD behaviour of this MoBo?

    Well for starters I think you are confused about somethings. With a 400 FSB the LOWEST you can have for a RAM frequency is 1:1 (2.00) which is 800

    Auto is not best, and it just seems that way if you are not getting things right. You can however leave them that way if you like but it is not the best performance or stability step at all. Auto is there so you can get into the BIOS with most any hardware and make your per hardware/user changes.

    Please if you do want to get 3.8 stable, fill this out with what you are using that fails or that is Auto and I will get you some suggested starting points

    Ok, Lets get 1066 working first, before you even try 1333 which your ram will not likely do

    Hello...I did not have enough time to do the testing and post the results until now.

    I followed all your instructions, changed everything in the BIOS, and believe me ...I tried hard several times with different settings, but was imposible for me to get the board to boot in other configuration than AUTO for the DRAM timing.

    At the moment the board is working OK at 3.6GHz, with CPU clock ratio 9x, CPU Host freq. 400MHz, Memory freq. 1333MHz (System Mem. Multiplier=3.33). I have set DRAM Voltage at 2.2V max. allowed by the manufacturer, and CPU Vcore at 1,325 (CPU_Z reports 1.296V). It worked OK at 3,8 GHZ but the CPU temperature when running ORTHOS was about 70 degrees Celsius which I dont like...so I prefered to low the freq. a little to 3.6GHz and got no errors running Orthos for a couple of hours.

    The only thing that I don't like is that could not get the board to work with manual settings as you recommended. I tried several times with your recomended settings and also with the timings shown by CPU-Z and MemSet with the board running, but all failed.

    Maybe are some timings of the Advanced Timing Control that the board don't like.

    What do you think?

    Which MCH latch did you try, or did you try it in Auto, with all other settings I suggested? I know it is alot of tweaking!

    1333 Ram speed is likely the issue, as your sticks are ONLY rated to do 1200

    Sounds like you may need a better cooler, or to reset it. 3.8 at 1.3 and under or above really should not be 70C. What cooler do you have.

    Well 3.6 is a nice overclock though anyway for sure since you bought a 3.16

    Faster and stable is best, sounds like you are there.

    I am using MCH Latch Freq. of 400MHz. I tested in manual memory timings with lower freq. setttins as you suggested in the beginning but did not work either but I was using V DRAM 2.1 then which I changed later to 2.2V so I will try again with 2.2V and tell you. The cooler is the one that came in the box with the processor. (INTEL) I checked it and seems to be well secured to the board.

    Ahh, OK Just wondered about the cooler, seems a little hot.

    Did you try higher with 333 MCH? It may work easier for you, it all just depends. Sorry you are not right here. I'd boot ya up pretty quick as high as it could go

    And you may want to use CAS 6 above 1200, that way you do not have to use tras 30, and such other high subtimings

    I tried again at lower freq ie 333 CPU Host and the same for MCI Latch but I did not work either. I am a little bit disappointed about this. I don't like to give up so fast but this try - not work - try again cycle is boring and time consuming. I just would like to have a clue about why it does not work. Does not exist a software tool to see all the timings that are being used by the board? Also the names of some parameters as reported by MemSet are not equal or I just was unable to find them at the BIOS.
    By the way ... what is the meaning of the timings in white that appear as the left column in the BIOS? are these the default timings? I tried with that values also without success.

    Well I meant 400 FSB and 333 MCH

    Did you read the guide I pinned for memory, it explains memset vs BIOS settings.

    The left column is just what AUTO is using RIGHT THEN IN THE BIOS.

    Please post again for me what is failing for you. Settings I gave, and things I suggested should work.

    Have you tested this ram in a different board, or this one.. One stick at a time at default to be sure you do not have a DOA stick? You should always do that when you first get Ram, DOA happens with any brand, and causes issues just like this
