    Default GA-EP35-DS3R cannot run stable w/ G.SKILL 8GB @ 1066

    Hi everyone,

I've been banging my head against a wall on this. I have a GA-EP35-DS3R motherboard with 4GB RAM (2x2GB) that has been running stable at DDR2-1066 for 6 months now. I have G.SKILL DDR2 PC2 8500 4GB kit memory in dual channel mode with the memory timings set in the BIOS exactly as G.SKILL has recommended in their documentation w/ screenshots from the GA-EP35-DS3 BIOS:

    http://www.gskill.us/166.pdf

This involves setting 5-5-5-15 timings, upping the memory voltage by 0.2V, setting Performance Enhance to standard, etc. Pretty much everything recommended in the memory timings guide here.

I bought an additional 4GB kit of the same memory and installed it to get 8GB total, but have not been to get my system to run stable with the same memory timings and voltages. memtest86+ 2.01 shows memory errors after 20-30 minutes of running. If I remove 2x2GB of the memory it runs stable or if I set the speed down to DDR2-800 with the memory timings set to Auto and voltage at normal things run stable.

At 1066 I've tried bumping up the voltage of the MCH by +0.1V and setting the PCI Express freq from auto to 100MHz like the guide here suggested, but it did not help.

Any other suggestions of BIOS settings to change or to try?

I guess my next step is to test each stick individually with memtest86+ at 1066 then in combination or I'll just be happy running at DDR2-800. :)

Thanks for this forum! It's very helpful!

    Regards,
    Eric

You probably need to increase your Memory TRFC setting in the MIT section of the bios.

I have tRFC set to 52 right now, but I'll try bumping it up to 62 or so and see how it goes.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Try aswell as the tRFC setting to back off your timings to say 5-5-5-18 or 6-6-6-18.

The tRas setting having quite an impact on larger amounts of ram and stability.

Also try memtest v2.01, not the version v3.4. The latter seems to have a buggy Confidence Error feature.

V2.01 that indicates some newer chipsets (ie P35) correctly..

Thanks for the suggestions, but I still can't get memtest86+ 2.01 to run without errors. Usually it errors out within 20 minutes, but with tRFC set up from 52 to 62 it ran over 1 hour with less errors than before.

I tried bumping up tRFC up higher to 68 and I reduced the timings to 5-5-5-18 and 6-6-6-18, but none of these worked. The least aggressive settings, +0.2V on MCH, 6-6-6-18 timings and 68 tRFC still didn't work. In fact, memtest86+ had even more errors unfortunately.

Has anyone been able to get 8GB running at 1066 with this board?

what kind of CPU do you have? What's the FSB running at? What memory multiplier are you using? Post your dull system specs and i'll see if i can recommend some BIOS settings

Right, please post your MIT Settings below And We can suggest you full timings. 8GB does take some tweaking and especially at 1066

What does the Spec sticker say on the side of the ram for voltages as well?

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

I have a E8400 Core 2 Duo running at the stock 3.0GHz with stock FSB speed. Here are the M.I.T. settings:

    Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]
    CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [9]
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [333]
    PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100]
    C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [3.20]
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Manual]

    Performance Enhance = [Standard]

    CAS Latency Time________________ 5
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________ 5
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay_______5
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________ 15
ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 3
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 3
    Write to Precharge Delay_________ 6
    Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 52
    Read to Precharge Delay__________ 3
    Static tRead Value_______________ 7
    Static tRead Phase Adjust________ 1

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
    DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [+0.200V]
    PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [Normal]
    FSB OverVoltage Control___ [Normal]
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control [Normal]
    CPU Voltage Control_______ [Normal]

I've tried increasing the Refresh to ACT Delay value as high as 68. Setting it to about 62 with everything else set as above seemed to result in the least memtest errors (about 30 over a 1 hour period).

I've also tried increasing tRAS to 18, setting the timings to 6-6-6-18 and bumping up the MCH voltage by +0.2V.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Ram voltage?

Thanks for the ram voltage, Yeah 2.0-2.1 would be the warrantied range. Some ram like that may only need 2.0 or less. But ya never know. I really think you will likely be fine at stock speeds with 2.0 once you change the things below. I see several reasons why you for sure would have had no luck with 8GB (Static Phase adjust set, Static tRead To Low, MCH Voltage needed) once those things are addressed you will see you have much better luck

This should work for you, provided you do not have any dead ram in the mix. You have tested EACH stick on by one right? If not, you should always on the day you buy it. Test each stick one by one at stock speeds, timings, and voltages with the latest Memtest86+ 2.01 (Older versions are not P35+ compatible and will show errors no matter what) >>>

    CAS Latency Time________________ 5
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________ 5
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay_______5
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________ 15

ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 3-5 (May need at lest 4 or 5 for 8GB)
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 3-6 (May need 8-12 for 8GB)
Write to Precharge Delay_________6 (May need 8-14 for 8GB)
Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 52-75 (Good range is like you found 62-65 or so for 8GB)

    Read to Precharge Delay__________ 3-8
    Static tRead Value_______________ 7-12
Static tRead Phase Adjust________ 1 << Set to Auto, this is likely your main issue. Using 1 here subtracts one from Static tRead Value and a Static tRead Value of 6, likely 7 as well, is not going to work for 8GB. You want this set to Auto which will be Zero

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
    DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [+0.200V] << Set to ram voltage on sticker, +.2 = 2.0 +.3 = 2.1V

    PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [Normal]
FSB OverVoltage Control___ [+0.1V] <<< For stability
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.2 - 0.35V] << Another Huge reason why you are not getting anywhere. 2x2GB needs more, let alone 2x4GB. I would start with trying .25 or so

    CPU Voltage Control_______ [Normal]

I'm running with a voltage of 2.0V with the +0.2V adjustment. The G.SKILL memory does say 2.0-2.1V on it, so maybe running with +0.3V is worth a try. Has anyone tried that?

    Thanks for the quick reply.
