    Unhappy Gigabyte GA-EP45 - DS3R Issues

    Hey all,

I'm having a distinctly odd problem. Whenever i turn the system on the system restarts just after it starts checking the ram (but does not complete the check) during post. The system sits there and repeatedly restarts until you power it down.

I solved this problem by taking out all the ram sticks, and arranging them until it booted, i installed windows and it all worked, however it then started to BSOD (3-4 times a day). So thinking it might be the ram, i took the system back to one stick of ram. Now the constant rebooting issues has come back, it freezes in the bios screen, if i let it run past post (it sometimes gets past) it goes to the Intel AHCI checking screen and locks up there, or it completes and then locks up, or it starts displaying random ASCII characters on the AHCI screen.

I have tried the system with

    • All ram bar 1 removed
    • All the ram arranged in the slots in different orders
    • With the sata harddrive and/or the sata DVD drive unplugged
    • With and without my fingers crossed

SOOO.. essentially i am completely befuddled. I have built alot of systems with gigabyte boards, and this is the first problem i have run into...

So yeah, and help would be hugely appreciated as i am at my wits ends

I would recommend you use LSD's template (found all over the place on this board) to post your current BIOS settings. It's certainly possible that you have a h/w problem, but these mobos are a bit tricky to get stable, especially with 2x memory configs. Post your BIOS settings and someone will help get you dialed in.

All of the value that were in the template and matched my settings i left as is. All the ones that did not match or did not have a value i entered here :)

I have also tried the ram at: 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1v. Same result as the auto settings at 5-5-5-15 @ 1.8v

Thanks in advance again :) And thanks for the prompt replies so far :)

I can't get into windows. I don't have a floppy drive and I'm not particularly comfortable playing with bios outside of the windows utilities for updating it.

How likely is it to be a Bios issue?

Well, since bios version F4, wich i supose ur mobo came with, there where 6 bios improvements written since then, (F10 now) and most of them memory related.
To get into windows try using one memory stick, add voltage to MCH Core to 1.2 V add the voltage to your ram, loose the timings and you should get into windows.
These days you don't have to have floppy to flash bios, you can do it with usb flash drive.
If you not comfortable, then i suggest you to start be, because the last thing you ever should do is to deal (flash, set) with your bios/settings from inside any windows. Aspecialy not with @BIOS!!!

If you posted it somewhere, sorry for asking...but I didn't see your BIOS version posted.
If you are not stable, it's definitely worth flashing to the latest non-beta BIOS. Most people here will strongly recommend that you do *NOT* use the windows-based BIOS flashing tools. Rather, use Q-flash from your USB flash drive. LSD posted a very nice sticky to walk you through this.

Right after flashing bios don't forget to load Optimized Settings, it is also very important.
And good luck! I'm sure you'll get your rig runing and stable, eventually.
