    Default GA-P35-S3G overclock help please

i have had this board now for a month and all attempts at OC have failed, i have spent hours upon hours searching for a solution and finally found a reference to this forum as the place to go... seems this is a problem that everyone has with this board but found no solution so far.

you enable the OC features in the bios but no matter what you set them at when the comp restarts it restarts again within a couple of seconds and its reset the bios features back to default.

i took the board in to the local computer guy yesterday and now i'm 20 poorer and still no overclock. i have found some people report success with version F3a of bios but i have that on the board but the problem still persists.

i have an intel Q6600 and 2 gig of ballistic 1066 ddr2 ram.

i have emailed gigabyte but they claim no knowledge of the problem.

i know newbies get mauled for asking already answered questions so i searched the board number and found nothing so please forgive me if this question has already been answered but i've been at the comp for 6 hrs solid now working on this and my fingers are swollen lol.

thanks but i don't see a single reference to overclocking in the link you sent and no explenation as to why or how anything on that link is relevent to my problem.

can i also thank the mods and more experienced members of this board for they're overwhelming response to my post... i'm touched really, brought a tear to my eye.

i use to take part in a forum on a subject i was expert in and we actually use to provide answers to peoples questions which i think is a more helpful aproach and something the mods on here might think about implementing LOL.

I am facing this same problem too. Every change in M.I.T except the CPU clock ratio & System voltage control, is reverted to the default values. Just can't seem to find any solution in overclocking this S3G board. Even a change in the PCI Express Frequency from Auto to any value like 105MHz is reset to the default Auto value. Some people said updating their bios versions to F3a helped. I have updated my bios to all the revisions. I have even disabled Legacy USB.... in the Integrated Peripherals to Disabled but it still refuses to overclock.

Sorry for the late reply, I was instaling a new board and had to redo my water loop.

This is a slow forum actually, so that may be why you seemed to only get one reply. And please note, at least you did get a reply. We do only have a few hand full of members who do rely to others here, most are here to Get help rather then give.

Sorry he may have meant to link you to that thread, and this one >>>
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/giga...g-guide-26112/

A triple reboot to stock means timings or voltages are wrong, a double reboot after making changes in the BIOS is normal. Just so you are sure what it normal for your board.

What I would do first of all in your case is test your ram one stick at a time with Memtest86+ (Must be this newer version 2.01, older versions are not P35 compatible) >>
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Test each stick, one at a time at stock speed, timings, and voltages. This way we know for sure you do not have a dying stick. Crucial Die VERY Often, and you just want to know for sure anyway before giving yourself a headache for no reason. They are also on my Personal list of incompatible ram for GA-P35, but many get them to work just fine so let's just see what we can get accomplished

Have you tried F4 at all? F3 and F4 final Versions are posted.

Here is your BIOS page >>>
    GIGABYTE - Support - Motherboard - BIOS - GA-P35-S3G

And please also read my guide if you plan to flash, this way you for sure have the correct methods in mind >>
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/bios...h-guide-27576/

Then please post your full spec's and give me the BIOS settings you are using now, or what fails for you. And a idea of what you are trying to overclock to and I will post back. Are you using Stock cooler?

    *NOTE*
You may need to use the Control + F1 hotkey to see all settings with that older BIOS, and maybe always since you have the budget P35 board the Newest BIOS may not have it removed. To Do this, on the MAIN page of the BIOS hit Control + F1 and the screen will flash, then all settings will be unhidden

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

OK this is what I did:

    1. Ran memtest...RAM is OK (& it should be as my PC is just 2 months old).
    2. Did ctrl+f1 on the main bios menu.
    3. Checked MemSet 3.5 - fsb/dram ratio is 1:2
    4. Changed the settings as shown below:

    Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]
    CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [12]
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [240] (initially was 200)

Auto for all that is why! And I see a few bad choices for sure by Auto

    Lets go to

    Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]
    CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [11]
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [240]
    (CPU speed is around 2.8Ghz)

PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100] << Always set

    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [3.33]
    (DRAM value was exactly 800MHz)

DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Auto]

    Performance Enhance = [Standard]

    CAS Latency Time________________ 4/5
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________ 4/5
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay_______4/5
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________ 12/15

    ^^ See below for 4-4-4-12 Comment ^^

ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 3-4
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 3-6
    Write to Precharge Delay_________ 4-6
Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 38-42 (Cheap ram may need 42-48, but not normally)

    Read to Precharge Delay__________ 3-5
    Static tRead Value_______________ 7-12
Static tRead Phase Adjust________ [Auto] << Leave on Auto

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]

DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [+0.1V] <<< = 1.9V (check your ram spec on the sticker and adjust accordingly) I think it may be 1.8 Spec'd ram, so I would use 1.9V anyway 1.9V = +0.1, although this is cheap ram it will do 4-4-4-12 at 1.9-1.95V

    PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [Auto]
FSB OverVoltage Control___ [+0.1V] << For stability
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.1V] << For stability
CPU Voltage Control_______ [1.32500V] (have also tried higher values) << May need more, havent seen many E4600's posted. I would try up to 1.35 or so, but at this small of a overclock I would think you are probably right on already. Shouldn't need much more if that even.

This is a 65nm CPU so you can go up much higher then 1.35 which is what you are likely used to seeing since everyone is using 45nm CPU's

I posted many ranges, please post what exactly you tried that fails. Overclocking is a art not something you try and just give up on or say well that dont work. You have to get in there and think and try things.

Now if you set all the above to the highest of everything I suggested and it still fails then you may have incompatible ram, or you need to update the BIOS. Which is what I would do first.

When you ran memtest86+ was it the newest Version 2.01? And did you run on each stick one by one? >>>>
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

I would for sure test the ram again if you slacked in this area, as you may be dealing with dying ram and not know it otherwise.

If you did for sure run that in DOS and it was the latest Version then the next thing I would do is properly flash the BIOS and try some more with the above settings

In the end, I would have to say it is very possible that brand of ram is not compatible, it is not on the QVL list, and the above should work for you for sure

Ok I did the memtest86+ v2.01 test(2 passes) on my 2GB memory stick for F3, F4 & F5 revisions & fortunately there was no error. Then I tried all the ranges of the memory timings that u mentioned.

    Result: Still no overclock.
