Default Giel Memory Slower Than Crucial Ballistix??

    Specs:

    EP35C-DS3R
    Q6600
    8800GTS
    2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR 1066 Crucial Ballistix

OK, so, following some issues I initially had with fan speed etc, I started reading through a lot of posts on this forum about Gigabyte boards etc. And how apparently thay don't like Crucial memory.

To save myself any future issues, I decided to purchase some Giel memory (as per various recommendations on here).

My question is as follows: Should Giel memory be slower in a benchmark when it's specs are the same as the Crucial Ballistix?

Benching using 3dMark06, I get about a 300 point drop when using the Giel. Is there a better way to check the memory performance?

Both sets are 1066MHz (they're both logged as 800MHz in CPUid, but sold as 1066). Timings are the same 5, 5, 5, 15. Both are running Dual Channel.

Any recommendations as to memory benchmarking utils would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Everest Ultimate or Sisandra would be better, 3DMark is more of a Gaming benchmark then a Memory testing utility.

Well it does depend on settings, both will use different at Auto, which it sounds like you are using. So you would have to actually manually set each setting exactly the same to compare then precisely. Auto will not set them the same for sure

Dont know which of those two will be better performance wise, at 800 4-4-4-12 or 1066 5-5-5-15, but I do know Geil is much better on a GA board.

    Thanks LSD.

The Giel definately ran at 800 on Auto, so I had to change the multiplier to make sure it was running at 1066.

I'll try one of the other tests your mention.

Will put the Crucial back in to get the exact settings for that too.

Good luck with your testing. Post some results.

I need to bench some Crucial Vs Mushkin myself and post for others to see, will get to it sometime

Giel results (approx as from memory):

    2 x DDR2 1066 5, 5, 5, 15

    Read - 7000MB/s
    Write - 2500MB/s
    Latency - 68.1ns

    The Crucial was slightly slower.

    Do these look about right?

    Thanks.

EDIT: Have just seen a screenie of Everest in this forum that looks completely different from mine!! Mine is black and white, the one here is a nice blue with graph backdrop!!

I think I've got an old version!

Do you have a link to he colour/new one?

Ahh, that is pretty slow. I guess that is not fully tweaked to best timings right?

Of everest? If so, here is the latest trial >>>
Lavalys - Comprehensive IT Security and Management

How it should look tweaked a bit, this is Mushkin 6400 ram at 900Mhz >>>

But since you tested both at the same exact settings you have you answer either way, GEIL is better

    Thanks LSD.

I've just found that trial and downloaded it, but I guess I'll have to pay if I want the full scores!

I'll see what tweaking I can do!!

    Ta.

    Ta.

I thought that you could see more scores if you picked the single benchmark tests, rather than running the benchmark suite of Everest.

All my memory benchmarks (r/w/c) for 5-5-5-18 @816mhz (ddr2) are around 7000MB/s. Latency 73.6ns - which is a fairly relaxed setup. (for now)
