Thread: Need help learning about "strapping"......

  1. Question Need help learning about "strapping"......

    I have a 4.0+ (800 Mhz strapping) and a 4.0~(1066 Mhz strapping) option available with my board's Memory Multiplier. I reckon if I was using DDR3 1333 memory sticks, instead of the current DDR2 1066, I would also have the 4.0#(1333 Mhz strapping) as well. The BIOS shows it over on the right in the Menu Help area. Looks something like this:

    + ---------> 800 Mhz strapping
    ~ ---------> 1066 Mhz strapping
    # ---------> 1333 Mhz strapping

    For the last few days I have been searching the internet trying to find information about the whole "strapping" thing. I have heard that using "straps" while doing heavy overclocking helps with system stability, so naturally. I'm very interested in learning everything so I can use it on my machine successfully.

    I am nowhere near comfortable with what I know about strapping to use either the 4.0+ or the 4.0~ option with my Memory Multiplier. If I have either option set on the Divider my memory speeds up 4x to whatever speed I am setting up/increasing for the FSB. It's my guess that the memory speed indicated is NOT going to be the actual speed of the memory, more like it's going to be the speed of whatever strap option I choose. In my case, since I have DDR2 1066 installed, it would have to be 4.0~(1066 Mhz strapping)....right????

    Anybody can feel free to tell me how wrong I am, my feet stink and my mother dresses me funny. But please, while your at it, tell me what website to go to, books to ready, whatever...so I can learn about this whole strapping thing.

    I GOTZ TO KNOW!!!!!!

    Thanks.

    Thanks for the tip svcglobal

    I've read it over and can't seem to get anything out of it.

    Seems to apply to newer Gigaboards. Doesn't help me understand how the strapping works on my board.

    I've got the GigaMush system undergoing MemTest right now. Got it set up running FSB 540 Mhz, CPU (7x) 3.24 Ghz, Memory (2.0x) 1080 Mhz, 5-5-5-18, 1:1 DRAM/FSB..... and....let me go....look.....80%+ thru the first pass and all is well.

    Wish I knew how to use my strap other tan keeping my pants up.

    Great! Saw that memory bandwidth figure (under CPU Lx caches) at MemTest left up corner? Write it down and try again with the other strap (as you wrote, not the one at your pants) and see what of these will give higher figure.

    Other strap??

    I had no idea I was using a strap for that overclock.

    All I had was the Memory Multiplier set at 2.0. The strap wouldn't be automatic with certain FSB speeds would it???

    As far as I can tell, Strapping options can only be set with the Memory Multiplier on my board: 4.0+(800 Mhz) and 4.0~(1066 Mhz).

    Keeping the same settings I had with the successfully overclock I tried with setting the Memory Multiplier at 4.0+ and 4.0~ and both resulted with 3 beeps at reboot and automatic reset of DRAM settings.

    If my board has any strapping options available I'll be damned if I know how to set it up. Apparently, the 4.0+ and the 4.0~ values DO speed up my memory 4x FSB.

    That kinda sucks.

    Now what do I do???

    Or is the strapping available with use with only certain CPU's????

    Naw...that can't be.

    LSD....HELP!!!!

    I'm kinda in the same boat. I've googled the ^*&%$ outta memory strap, strapping, etc... and I still have no idea what the difference between a 4.0+ (800) and a 4.0~ (1066) strap does. I mean, shouldn't the resulting frequency be the same since the multiplier is? I think I read it has something to do with MCH timings, but I still don't understand exactly how it affects OCing and stability. Someone explain please?

  9. Default Re: Need help learning about "strapping"......

    I think, on my board, any strapping is done automatically. I've noticed that when I make all the higher overclock settings (after running stock) and reboot, there is a "click", like a sound of a switch turning on. And then when I tune it down and reboot there is another click, not as loud as the first one though. Might be voltage related.

    I don't understand. Why would the BIOS have the 4.0+ and 4.0~ in there in the first place and then have some reference to them in the Help menu??

    I'm gonna phone Gigabyte USA tomorrow and see if they'll tell me what this is all about. They're not responding to my tech support email.
