    Default Overclocking on EP45-DS3P

    So after updating my BIOS from F7 to F8 to fix the S3(STR) sleep state my overclocked settings became kinda unstable. I've ran through Prime95 for over 24 hours using the blend test small FFTs, OCCT 2 hours, Intel Burn Test for 10 loops, memtest86, and whilst the tests were running I was using the PC normally such as listening to music, browsing the net, chatting to friends, playing games etc to stress it even more and it passed with flying colours.

    I can boot up, reboot, turn off the PC fine and it will still work without a hitch. But as soon as I put it into sleep mode and wake it up the PC will crash and go into repeated reboot loops. It's different in F7 BIOS though as my PC would normally just get a BSoD no matter if I had everything stock or overclocked but it would always boot back up fine. But now it wakes up fine with stock settings but not overclocked settings.

    Wondering if I could find some help here if possible? System specs are (stock) :
    CPU: C2D E8500 1.2250V
    RAM: 2x2GB OCZ Reapers DDR2 800 (4-4-4-15) 2.1V
    Mobo: Gigabyte EP45-DS3P
    GPU: ATI HD3850 256MB (I know, I will be upgrading it soon, possibly HD4870 1GB or something better when the new GPUs come out)
    HDD1: Western Digital 150GB Raptor
    HDD2: Western Digital 640GB 640AACS
    PSU: Corsair HX620 - 620W
    Case: CoolerMaster CM690


    I kinda have VERY low amount of money and building this rig took many months of saving and I usually build up bit by bit but my last upgrade I bought a whole bunch or parts in one go for the first time including the motherboard so don't mind me being a little frustrated because I can't get something to work right

    Hmm very odd since you are stable for all those tests. What are you overclocked to? Do you have legacy USB storage detect disabled?

    Mind posting me your settings so I can see if anything looks off, I have the same board and mine resumes fine from a 4Ghz overclock >>>>

    WOW, all that AUTO for memory timings, that is likely your issue. Auto is just not going to work well with anything much above 2x1 of 800Mhz ram at stock speeds

    For 2x2 I would suggest this for you to try and get stable before S3 is going to work >>>

    Yes, I'm quite noobish when it comes to the RAM. I was gonna learn about it when I first started overclocked but when I discovered there was so much to know about RAM I told myself I'd leave it to later, never thought it would catch up on me though after all these years

    As for CPU VCore needing more then 1.4V, I'm only on air cooling and don't exactly feel safe going more then 1.4V. It's mis Spring and going onto Summer and we are expecting temps to be in the high 30s low 40s Celcius and even now at 20C my CPU @ 1.36870V hits 70C under Intel Burn Test, or around 60-65C using Prime95.

    But anyways, time to crack out the pen and paper and start writing, overclocking is so messy with Intel CPUs, at least in comparison to overclocking my old AMD rig

    Just a quick question before I continue, with the memory timings should I set everything to the highest value you suggested and bench/test and if successful slowly lower it down till I start getting instability then increase it by 1 value?

    OK, I think I've come to a conclusion.

    I set all the settings to the ones you prescribed for me and had no luck. I could boot into windows fine but failed waking up form sleep without getting the constant reboot loops.

    After messing around in the BIOS trying to figure out why this could be happening (further increased volts and loosened timings without any luck) I decided to mess with the FSB and do it the VERY slow and old fashioned way. Increasing everything by 1 increment at a time and testing it.

    Leaving all the settings listed above form you except CPU VCore is at 1.4V I managed to increase the FSB to a maximum of 422 with the 9.5 CPU multiplier to get 4009MHz, anything higher the it would crash after waking up from sleep.

    I managed to get a maximum of 446 FSB with a 9x CPU multiplier for 4014MHz, anything higher the and PC would crash after waking up from sleep. I tested sleep mode 3 times before moving onto the next increment as sometimes the PC would wake up fine the first go but fail the second or 3rd.

    It doesn't matter how much volts I apply (I even tried 1.45V) it won't budge any more then it is now so I guess my only option now is to tighten the timings and get the best possible performance I have now.

    I also tested 472 FSB with 8.5 CPU multiplier and 500 FSB with 8 CPU multiplier and they both failed to boot so I can only guess it's FSB limited there.

    EDIT: I'm kinda disappointing with these result. Would have been better saving the extra $30 and getting an E8400 instead. But I'm really confused to why it would crash in sleep mode yet be perfectly fine with much higher clocks with massive amount of stress programs.

    yeah unless you've got your boar really cold its hard to get past about 475-480MHz on the DS3P... try the same settings but with your DRAM:FSB at 1:1 so the RAM is running at 860MHz... this might your rig get slightly more stable, as the reboot problem might come from overstressed memory

    Funny thing is I WAS able to boot into windows with 500 FSB and 8x CPU multiplier. In fact I think I managed to get 530 FSB as my max and still be able to run benchmarks though it was kinda unstable when using the F7 BIOS.

    I hope they plan on brining out a new BIOS update as I'm starting to have a feeling that it's the BIOS itself causing these problems.
