    Default GIGABYTE GA-X48-DQ6 compatibility issues

I helped pick parts and had a friend in another part of the country put it together for me. I picked the GIGABYTE GA-X48-DQ6, 1000 watt p/s, the quad core Intel Q9450 cpu (2.66) and Crossfire Diamond ATi 3870's, 2 Seagate Barracuda 7200 ST3750330AS 750GBs, 8 gigs of OCZ DDR2 800 RAM, a Sound Blaster Audigy card, and a Vista View TV tuner card using Vista Ultimate 64 bit. When he put it together everything worked fine. When I got it, immediately, using my screen saver made the thing lock up. After that, with the screen saver off, World of Warcraft started freezing up intermittantly, and eventually all the time. Now it's to the point where the game won't even load in before the computer freezes up.

This was back in May '08, and since then I've:
    • Replaced the sound card
    • Replaced one of the hard drives when it burned out from all the rebooting the computer did on its own
    • Tried swapping the RAM in and out in various combos (same result with either 4 or 8 gigs in any combo)
    • Wiped my RAID configuration, put WinXP on one of them and Vista 64 on the other - it reboots or freezes under either OS
    • Tried using just one ATi 3870 - same result (they are made by Diamond)
    • Returned my Vista View tv tuner that wouldn't work and got a Win-TV tuner - that also now doesn't work
    • Sent the Gigabyte mobo back - they flashed the bios and sent it back - still same results
    • Sent one of my 2 Diamond ATi cards back - replacement gave the same result (freeze and/or reboot)
    • Sent the Gigabyte mobo back again - replacement gave the same result
It is now late October and I'm disgusted with the rig I have. Almost all of the components in it have been replaced, and I'm still where I was in May. Any ideas out there about the compatibility of these pieces with each other?

    Disgusted in NJ,
    Jeff

4-8GB of ram needs many adjustments in the BIOS to be stable. If all is in Auto I have no doubt you woudl have issues and would also be surprised you can even post. Sorry you had not found this site sooner and had to deal with these issues so long, they can be easily fixed (If your board is ok that is)

Please post your settings you are using for me and I will advise, Also please let me know which ram you are now using and how much (Link or model # would be great)

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

I had to post from work because my rig is in the shop again. This morning it wouldn't turn on at all (start and stop for 5 seconds each). When I get it back I'll look up the bios settings as you requested (thank you for replying).

    In the meantime, my RAM is Newegg.com - OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory
OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory. In Vista Ultimate I was able to use all 8 gigs in some circumstances.

Again, I'll post bios settings later when/if they can get it going again.

    -Jeff

K, If you have issues remove all but one stick of ram until you get some settings from me. Just so you know 4-8GB needs 1.2-1.3+ MCH voltage, manually set ram voltage, and trfc (Refresh to act delay of 52-62 4gb/54-70 8GB) And possibly some other minor changes. But normally That is where Auto fails to get things correct

Let me know when you get it all back
