Thanks for your suggestions. I just swapped both cards, reinstalled chipset drivers (latest ones downloaded from Gigabyte), 12V is present, the psu is 650W. Anyway, the crossfire setup with these cards worked with a MSI 9KA1 mobo (which I had exchanged after serious compatibility problems with my WD Velociraptor: the MSI would not recognise this drive).
Anyway, now this mobo does not yet recognise my second graphics card. I will try and reboot now with my monitor in the second card and report back shortly.

Both cards work in the 16x slot (PEG); nothing works in the 8x slot (PEG1).
    Bad mobo?

Did you set PEG1 when you tested it out? Now actually you may need to reinstall the driver when you switch to test that slot, I am not sure about that. But I would try it for sure before you decide the slot is bad

But yeap, if that slot tests bad you will have to RMA the board for sure

Yes, I did set it to PEG-1 with the card in the x8 slot.
I am currently writing this with a card in the x16 slot, no drivers installed. When I install a card in the x8 slot and bios set to PEG-1 I do not even get a screen at boot.

Sure does sound like a bad slot then to me, is that what you are gathering as well?

Today I received a new replacement board from the supplier.

But still the same symptoms!!! I am becoming desperate. I am in touch with ATI/AMD; they recommend a registry cleanup with specific keys to be removed (they gave details, very accurate, which I followed), and a complete ATI software removal and re install of the latest software ...which I did, from Drivers & Tools | GAME.AMD.COM ... but no solution yet...

Obviously no two mobo's would show the same error as this one. I do something wrong, I am almost sure, but I am completely out of any fresh ideas.... I do not want to give up, but at the moment I ran out of steam. Please, any suggestions?

Have you disabled the Onboard Chip in the BIOS? If not try that, and then maybe a clean install! >>>

    Internal Graphics Mode

Allows you to determine whether to allocate memory for the onboard graphics controller from the system memory or SidePort memory

Disabled Disables the onboard graphics controller. << Set to disabled

All that reg business and previous driver installs likely messed something up (Be sure you install chipset driver)

Ok, I will try that tonight. I will disable onboard vga (but I think i did try that once already) and create a separate partition on my hard disk to do a complete new windows xp install, install chipset drivers and take it from there. I will report on the progress.

I did a complete new install in a separate directory, installed chipset drivers and all this with the monitor connected to the graphics card in pci-e slot x16.

Then I shutdown the pc, restarted with bios all reset too, and the system started up ok.
Then I removed the card from pci-e slot x16, connected its power supply cable to the card in pci-e slot x8, the monitor too, and restarted. NO IMAGE on the monitor.

Then I connected the monitor to the onboard vga, I get an image on the monitor.
Then I disable the onboard vga and set bios vga to PEG-1 (according to the manual the setting needed for a card in pci-e x8). Restart, NO IMAGE.

This is the second mobo, both vga cards work, the power supply is working and connected to the card(s), but I get nothing out of a monitor connected to pci-e x8. Not with bios all reset, not with bios set to PEG-1, not with any of two good and working vga cards.

    I am totally completely puzzled.
