Sounds like you maybe got the same board sent back to you that was broke the first time. Did you mark it with UV to be sure you got a new board? I have seen many people get the same exact board back after they sent it in and was told it was new.

I would RMA for a Bad second slot and mark the board with UV marker and then check the new board to be sure you do not get the same.

Sounds to me as if slot 2 is bad for sure. Got a buddy with 2 cards you can test his out?

The board is 100% a different one; I went to the shop and we swapped the two boards. So I was physically present and saw the two boards, the one I returned was put aside and the new board was taken out of a sealed box and handed to me.

The pc does not even start up with the asus 8800gt installed, in none of both pci-e slots.

I have a Antec Neopower 650W supply. I did a psu calcualtion on the Antec website and come out at 625W.
I used fairly heavy load specs though, so the result is calculated as worst case.

Ahh! Ok, well that is good you got to see it was a new board.

Could still be a DOA board, see how your other card does in that slot

With the Asus 8800gt card I do not even get a start-up.

Could this be a second doa? I just called the shop and they agree to have this exchanged as well; tomorrow they will have the new one in. I will keep you posted.

Their technical guru advised me to upgrade the bios, but right now it already is the second most recent bios version. I checked Gigabyte site and the latest version covers something like support for a new version cpu which I do not have. Worth doing the upgrade anyway?

addendum: the spare asus 8800gt is defective, just found that out.

Latest bios flashed (F2A); no change. PCI-E slot x8 still dead.
Tomorrow I exchange the mobo and post the result.

Let me know what you find out. Why do you think your older card is dead? Was it working when you used it last or is it just really old and you are not sure?

Third Gigabyte mobo (MA790GP) received from the shop last night, installed five minutes ago: same symptoms. Still no monitor detect from PCI-E slot x8.
PCI-E slot x16 and onboard vga work fine.

Is Gigabyte now commercialising motherboards with non-working items on them? What is going on, I really wonder.....

(for Lsdmeasap: the Asus card is defective because it was salvaged from a pc where the psu fried; I had completely forgotten about that, sorry; yesterday I RMA-ed this card).
