Default Is it as simple as timing my EP45-DS3R with Mushkins

I am posting this, hoping LSDMEASAP or someone has a solution….. I am VERY new to working with the BIOS… this is my first build.
I would greatly appreciate some assistance. You seem to be the GURU with Gigabyte LSDMEASAP. THANK YOU in advance. Sorry for the long message but I was hoping as much detail as possible would help. My overall questions are…….
1. How do I test my memory slots to make sure they work?
2. I have no floppy so how do I test my memory other than by trial and error attempts.
3. Do I need a floppy to run memtest?
4. If all the hardware is in order how do I set the BIOS timings and voltage to make the hardware run correctly?
5. When do I insert second stick, before or after BIOS changes?
I have the following system;
CASE XCLIO A380BK ATX Full tower w/3 fans 2@210mm
POWER SUPPLY PC Power and Cooling S61EPS 610W
MOBO Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R LGA 775 w/F10 BIOS
PROCESSOR Intel Core2Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 64W
COOLER Xigmatek HDT-002 92mm attached w/cooling gel
MEMORY Mushkin XP Ascent 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 SDRAM 800 (PC2 6400)
Model number 996622
ONLY using 1 (one) 2GB stick due to my issues
VIDEO CARD GeForce 9800 GTX XXX 512 MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0
HARD DRIVE 1 WD Caviar SE16 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0 GB
HARD DRIVE 2 Seagate 640GB
DVD BURNER Samsung 20x DVD+-R Burner SATA Model SH-S203N
DVD ROM Asus Model DVD-E616A3T 16x DVD 48XCD SATA
OS Vista 64 Home Premium SP1 with all current updates
I put all together and loaded the OS with the 4GB in comp. I had numerous problems and believed it to be my lack of experience, my video card, no idea. The problems were BSOD, continuous restarts, getting booted out of game programs, etc… Over several weeks I have read a ton of posts in forums and believed my problem was the Vista vs 4GB or RAM issue. I have been able to get my comp running nicely. To run without problems I have to run with 1 module of 2GB only in slot number 1 (yellow to the left).
I have tried each stick in the number 1 slot with no problems. When I put the second stick in the number 3 slot I get continuous crashes prior to the BIOS loading then I get continuous beeps from the MOBO. I tried placing the 2 sticks in the red memory slots and got the BSOD. I can not fit the 2 sticks in the 1 and 2s slot as they are too wide. Is placing them in slots 1 and 2 a choice anyways?
I have since Q-flashed my BIOS to F10, comp is running again. 2GB is great, each stick is the same, no issues. I try to put the second stick in and the MOBO lights up and then dies, for a few times then I get the multi beeps twice then locked up. I then, turn off, pull out the second memory stick and restart, no problem.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
With 1 stick of 2GB for a total of 2GB my comp starts and says single channel mode. It confirms BIOS F10. My current BIOS settings are the default except my timings are 4, 4, 4, 12 and my voltage for the memory is 2.0. If you need them in detail I will start typing them into a reply...
Not looking to overclock, just want what I have to run smoothly… maybe OC later with more experience or if you suggest a small amount for now...
Thanks….

Memtest86+ can be ran from DOS with a CD or from a Bootable USB stick. So do you have a ultimate boot cd or blank cd-RW you can make into a Bootable System cd? Or do you have a USB stick? If so let me know which you have or what you think about those ways And I will help you get going with memtest86+

I do suggest you buy and install and set as first boot device a floppy though, they are only $5-8 and can be a lifesaver if you crash your BIOS boot block

You can run vista with 4GB or more just fine, you just need the right settings. You can set the below settings with one stick in and save and shut down the system and put in the second

Yes you can use slots 1 and 2 but it is not best for sure, use 1+3 or 2+4

You just need some settings help is all for 4GB to run, especially with P45

Here try this with both sticks in dual channel. This is just all stock to get you going with 4GB, all settings as ranges use the highest given for now until you get going >>>

Thanks Lsdmeasap!
I printed your instructions and and currently looking for the directions to made a boot CD and a boot USB, seeing as I have a spare....
I will also get memtest set to go...
I ordered a floppy also but will leave Legacy USB enabled in case I have an issue today...
Will be trying the settings as soon as I have the boot media ready..

OK, I made a bootable USB thumb drive. I believe I set the boot order to USB, CD, Hard Drive now. I am still trying to find out how to make a boot CD. On my thumb drive I have my BIOS F10 and the flash program.

I put this version of memtest on it
http://www.memtest.org/download/2.01...+-2.01.exe.zip.

I put this on it also.
http://www.memtest.org/download/2.01...6+-2.01.tar.gz

Am I tracking in the right direction?

OK.....I followed instructions and tried my fist boot.
With changes above and both sticks in slots 1 and 3 (yellows) I got the mobo lights on, a series of mulitple beeps, then shut down and auto restart, beeps, shutdown, etc, etc...
I tried the 2 sticks in 2 and 4 and was able to get past BIOS. Then I got BSOD at the Vista load screen....
-----Interupt exception handled
I tried to restart an dgot the BSOD
-----APC index mismatch
I tried to start again and got BSOD
-----Page fault in non paged area

I have placed (1) 2GB stick of RAM back in slot 1 (yellow to the left) and removed teh second stick----now on 2GB total.
I am at BIOS screen...................

WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE??????

Im not the gigabyte guru but this is what I would have tried
It should really be working with the settings Lsdmeasap posted but the settings below are extemly loose so it should defently work.
The old values are in the () things.
keep the rest according to Lsdmeasaps post
If it works try to change back the settings one by one until it doesnt work
start with the System Memory Multiplier

System Memory Multiplier ..............: 2.00 (2.40)

CAS Latency Time........................5 (4)
tRCD .........................................5 (4)
tRP'...........................................5 (4)
tRAS..........................................18 (12)

and finally

tRTP...........................................7 (6)

My issues are common ones when the timing is off? Not indicative of other issues?

If the settings i posted above doesnt help then I think you have other issues
you can also try to change "MCH Core" to 1.35 to see if that helps but that will make the north brige pretty hot if you dont have a good airflow over it.

I adjusted the setting as skyscraper suggested. I then started the comp and it went all the way to desktop on 2GB or RAM (accidental on my part). I shut down, put in the other 2GB and started machine. MOBO lights up like all is well. Then shuts down. Lights up again but only 1 led lights...I get the multiple beeps continuously.
