    Default EP45-DS3L & RAM Issues

    Hello all, sorry if my mistakes are obvious or if something's gone wrong by my fault - it was my first time building a computer and a friend recommended me I get this motherboard (EP45-DS3L).

    Myself, I added a Corsair Twin2X4096-6400C5 set of RAM (4GB; 2x2GB@800MHZ)

    I've had small issues since the beginning - the motherboard would endlessly cycle if it had RAM in slots 1,3 with default settings. I moved them to 2,4 and it booted normally, would allow me to do most of anything that didn't involve heavy duty, but 2-5 min inside a game (WoW) would freeze the entire system requiring a hard reboot.

    First of all, I went through and flashed my BIOS to the latest, and added the latest drivers from Gigabyte, that didn't seem to work very well for my problem.

    Later, I stumbled upon these and other forums and followed a few tweaks, namely reducing the (G)MCH voltage by 0.5V, and changing my settings down from Turbo to Standard. I don't intend on doing any overclocking so this suited me fine. I also noticed the RAM wanted 1.9V instead of 1.8V, so I tweaked that to 2.00 too as per some suggestions in here.

    This worked very well for awhile, and I could even switch my RAM back to 1,3 and make it work perfectly so I was a happy camper. Later, after 8-9 hours of WoW playtime, data starts corrupting and I am forced to run memtest again. (I had tried during these times but it would always hang without errors within 3-4 minutes).

    This time, memtest went through and, fair enough, a boatload of errors were found and it crashed right after. I'm now in the process of testing each stick of RAM individually, and atleast in slot 1 and 2, I've been peppered with errors and had it crash.

    Before I seek out replacements or just something easier for me in general, is there anything I could try to solve this problem?

    Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Additional specs if they matter:
    E8400 3.00 GHZ Core Duo, Windows Vista 64 Ultimate

    Addendum: From over 10000 errors at 2.00V, to only 900 errors at 1.90V (RAM's required), all during Test #6 of Memtest. Experimenting with more settings...

    Down to only 600 errors (...) by using 1.05V MCH Core, Standard Performance Enhancement, and 1.9V DRAM Voltage...

    It's a long shot, but would changing some timings help anything, or should I just return the RAM and/or Motherboard for an easier-to-setup model?

    I would recommend MCH 1.2-1.3 and trfc of 62-62. Depending on your MCH latch choice a static tread of 7-10 for 333 MCH latch and 8-12 for 400 MCH latch.

    Are you manually settings all timings or not? Those above are most important when it comes to getting 2x2GB stable. P45 BIOS is a bit tricky compared to older BIOS like P35, but yes with proper settings you should be fine. If you do want a simple BIOS GA-P35 would be your way to go.

    I went on a limb and randomly added +1 to all my ram speeds (as you will be able to see on my post), making it 6-6-6-18 instead of 5-5-5-18 and lo and behold, no errors in memtest. (I was only using one stick of RAM instead of both).

    So yes, I suppose manually tweaking these settings (which I know nothing about, sadly), would probably make me have a stable system.

    I couldn't see some of these, and CTRL+F11 wouldn't show them. They're defaults, I suppose.

    Something worth noting is that I originally followed your advice to add to the MCH Core a few more V, but it only resulted in freezings and/or errors as well in the past. Computer worked just fine for 1 day with 1.05V MCH / 2.10V RAM, but then tonight all those errors popped up.

    Optimization suggestions and/or fixes would be appreciated, I have no idea what I did by replacing the 5's with 6's, but memtest, as mentioned, gave no errors whatsoever which boggles me and pretty much everyone near me who tried to help me.

    The Hotkey is Control + F1 on the MAIN Screen of the BIOS and then go into MIT section after the screen flashes. And yes, some may not be shown at all either way in your board or BIOS version.

    Edit: MCH Core being over 1.100 (or even at 1.100) seems to cause memtest to freeze all the time, 1.050 seems to work just fine when it comes to running tests flawlessly.

    I did a few more tests during this time:

    6-6-6-18 @ normal settings 4GB (standard, 1.050mch core, 1.9V), 163 errors at test 6

    5-5-5-18 @ your suggested settings 4GB, freezeup

    5-5-5-18 @ 1.050mch core, suggested settings, 161 errors.

    It's really odd, since running Vista with 2GB at 6-6-6-18 seems to be working just right.

    Test #6 from Memtest always posts errors/hangs at different places even if I put the RAM in slots 1 and 2. At this point, I wouldn't mind letting go of the dual channel if it means a stable system, but I'm running out of ideas :(

    Also, lsd:

    When you post numbers like 3-5, 10-12 etc, does it mean I should try numbers, ie; 10,11,12, or change FROM 10 to 12? I'm sorry, I can't quite make that out in some of those suggestions.

    Ranges I post mean use the higher ones first then work your way back testing as you go.

    Did you try MCH 1.2 and 1.3?

    You can try MCH Skew 50-150 and see if it helps, I would also try 2.0V on the ram again with MCH 1.24 or 1.26 and see how it acts. As those timings are loose enough you should not be getting errors.

    You did test each stick on day one to be sure you did not get sent a faulty stick right?

    If not, you should now so you can RMA if you still have time. Each stick should be tested in slot one at manually set main timings (w/ MCH Latch Auto) manually set memory multiplier to stock speed, manually set ram voltage and everything else in auto. If either stick fails this you have a faulty module

    Yeah, I tested both sticks separately as I got them; it's getting them to work together that's the problem - tonight after some extensive testing, I combined some data and finally cleared memtest86 without errors, on slots 1 and 2 for 4GB RAM total.

    I then ran chkdsk to check for corruptions on my hdd, nothing, so everything's working well as of this moment.

    I'll post my BIOS settings in a little bit, editing this post, just wanted to report some success from combining some of your settings and yes, varying the ranges of several of the settings in order to get Test #6 and Test #7 both passed on memtest.

    I did try MCH 1.2 and 1.3, I've found that on these higher settings, memtest will freeze, not error, for whatever reason, so many times the test didn't pass test 0 or test 1 with higher MCH voltages.

    Thanks so much for your time and help! I did end up using some of your advanced settings for the most part, and after 5 hours, atleast I am running on 4GB Single-channel without errors in RAM.

    Magically, the errors from my wireless PCI adapter (an error I neglected to mention) also disappeared and everything seems to be working alright now.

    Now, if I want to try Dual-Channel (bear with me, as I don't know about voltages and such that much), am I looking for more tweaking of my settings, or are the single-channel settings good enough for dual-channel too?

    I'll post my complete BIOS settings in a bit, in case it helps anyone regardless. :)

    Edit 1: no matter what I did, I had to bump up my timing to 6-6-6-18, this much I know without booting up there again.

    Looking back at it, I suppose it didn't work with the advanced settings past bumping the channel static tread value up. I know tests 6 and 7 in memtest had me pulling my hair out and trying so many different settings, I may have reset the variables at some point.

    But as mentioned, MCH voltages past 1.100V seemed to freeze memtest for some reason...
