    Question GA-EP45-UDP3, realtek hd audio freezes on standby

    I recently purchased the GA-EP45-UDP3 motherboard. I installed a fresh copy of XP SP3 on it, and I found out that if I put the computer into standby mode, and then I wake it up, it will get to the desktop, but if I try to change any volume settings or if I open the Control panel, everything freezes. I cannot shut down (doesn't let me terminate the Realtek HD Audio Manager), and I have to do a hard shutdown and reboot it. I updated it to the F5a BIOS, I turned on S2/S4 CPU states in the BIOS, but I don't think that has anything to do with standby? How can I get rid of this problem; can I get rid of the Realtek HD manager? It's a fresh system, so reinstallation is easy.

    The motherboard is coupled with E8400 cpu, a HD4850 card from MSI (Newegg.com - MSI R4850-512M Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards, I am aware that the card has its own audio, too), 500W OCZ StealthXStream PSU (Newegg.com - OCZ StealthXStream OCZ500SXS 500W ATX12V / EPS12V Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies), 2GB (2x1gb) memory (Newegg.com - OCZ SLI-Ready 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory), two SATA hard drives. No optical drives. This morning when I turned on the computer, it went into an on-off loop, and I had to turn off the PSU, and then turn the PSU back on, then it boot fine.

    I wasn't sure how to install the drivers, though. I loaded all the things from the Gigabyte CD, because I didn't know how to get the individual drivers. I read somewhere I should get the official Intel drivers. I downloaded new Catalyst drivers from ATI, and then I updated the Realtek HD drivers to the R207 version I found. WinXP couldn't be set up with SATA ACHI enabled, so I disabled that (should that be left on?). But anyway, my main problem is with the freezing when I come out of standby. I think returning from hibernation works fine, though.

    Yes, you can disable the Realtek from startup. That's what you mean right? If so, you can do this a few ways, easiest is windows defender, tools, software explorer and in the startup tab find it and disable it.

    You S3 issue is all in your settings in the BIOS. Normally this is caused by unstable ram or CPU Settings. You have to be 100% Stable and Auto is just not going to cut it with most all setups.

    S3 Sleep is all that you need enabled in the BIOS to use S3 sleep

    Then please post me your full settings you are using in the BIOS and I will advise

    Thanks Lsdmeasap! I read around the forums here and I think you said that AHCI is pretty useless for SATA, so I'm going to take the easy route and just leave it as it is.

    Do you know what might be the cause that Realtek is freezing? It's somewhat useful at the moment; if the freezing problem can be resolved, that is. I'm at school this week (system is at home), so I won't get back home to my computer until the end of this week, and I'll post my settings for you to look over then. I think I did put down S3(STR) in the BIOS, and enabled S2/S4. Do you know why S2/S4 are disabled by default; I thought it would be beneficial to have it on.

    Well it all depends really. NCQ is a bit faster, on some drives. But yes, you do need a Floppy drive to install XP AHCI or you have to slipstream the driver

    The audio may freeze as part of your S3 resume failure. S2 and S4 are normally not used is why they may have been disabled by default. S1 and S3 are most often used

    Hi Lsdmeasap. Since I'm on F5a BIOS, should I downflash to F4 BIOS, or do you think it will be fine?

    I don't think I loaded the 'optimized' values after flashing, either, so I'm going to do that and then change some of the settings, then drop off all the BIOS entries for you to look at.

    Well try out the one you are using now for a while first. Ya load optimized for sure and then set your ram voltage and save/apply. Then go back to the BIOS and set your disk settings again, and anything else you want.

    And once you get me your settings I will advise you back later today

    Okay, I loaded the optimized defaults, and here is what is showing up, along with the changes I made. I noticed you had some other numbers and settings in there, but I changed it to what is showing up in the BIOS I have on the screen. Please let me know what should be changed. Thanks!

    You are not overclocking? S3 should work no problem then if you have the latest BIOS

    Nah, I don't think I really need to overclock right now; I just want to get it all stable and working first. The parts are fast enough for me right now, hehe.

    Under, Advanced Timing Control, what are the ranges that you provided for? Do I just pick some numbers that seem to work well?

    Ya, I just made those comments because it SHOULD be working fine with no overclock. I would have to assume you having performance enhance on Turbo was the cause

    Those are optimal ranges, with higher being looser/more stable and lower being tighter/less stable/best performance.

    Use this for testing if you start lowering them, an for lower them slowly >>>

    You may be fine with them all at the lowest I posted as you are not overclocking at all
