    Default EP45 16Gb Ram?

    Has anyone tried to run 16 Gb of RAM on a EP45 board yet? If so - interested in hearing what RAM you used and if any special tweaking was required to run it.

    Tweaking would be required for sure, if you have used 4+ GB you would already know.

    8GB is overkill, but if you really did need 16GB then yes you could run it but it would require some tunning

    You would need an OS (version) to support that amount of Ram too. A 64bit OS wouldn't be the only requirement.

    Vista 64 Basic Would NOT support 16GB of ram, but Vista 64 Premium would - Maximum though.

    Ms have "crippled" both Vista 64 "Basic" & "Premium"

    Vista 64 memory limitations

    Home Basic = Max 8GB
    Home Premium = Max 16GB

    Business = 128GB
    Enterprise = 128GB
    Ultimate = 128GB

    I'm running XP64 which I think will support it - the reason for thinking about 16Gb is I do HD Video Editting with Vegas Pro 8.1 whic is a 64 bit application that can fully utilize the RAM - it varies RAM usage based on what is available. I believe this is a bottle neck for speed on my system although Cache on the processor is probably as well - don't want to go to 8GB with 4 sticks if 16 will help speed things up by eliminating / reducing virtual memory usage / PF ing . Going from 8 to 16 later would leave me with 8gb laying around unused.

    Looking at that link I posted i believe XP64 will support upto 128GB of Ram, so yes you would be fine.

    But even if your board supports 16GB of ram (haven't checked as of yet) you would be faced with the problems people now have of getting even 8GB to run with stability.
    Also you would have to purchase all your RAM in one go, to help ensure that the chips used on the modules are all of the same make, model, speed and revision.

    The price of 4 x 4GB modules at present is expensive, not to mention 2 x 8GB (which cost a small fortune), although i don't think the later is supported by this board if the memory QVL is anything to go by - max shown is a 4GB module, although that could be updated.

    Crucial pricing on 4GB and 8GB modules in (x 1.7 for $)

    From someone who has had dificulty getting 8GB to run free of problems, dont do it, its not worth the effort and if you do, make sure that you research it up front, for instance, get a motherboard thats guaranteed to run it free of problems and get confirmation from both memory and MB manufactures, i very much doubt they will give you this..

    Very true,

    I only found one 4GB module shown on the QVL for this motherboard, which although we know it doesn't have to be on the list to work, the inclusion of just one entry would concern me a bit.

    I was thinking of asking the memory company which boards they have validated that 16gb works on instead of visa versa. As an example - Gskill says they have validated 8Gb on an EP45-DQ6 -

    http://newgskill.web-bi.net/bbs/view...esc=asc&no=123

    They don't list my board but do one P35 board from gigabyte - wonder if they would have information on stable bios settings for this application and how much different it would be from a P45 board.

    Newegg.com - G.SKILL 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Quad Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

    I don't want to sink over $400 in RAM if it's not going to work, so good point on checking this out closely with someone first for proven stable operations - I was hoping someone here had done it on a P45 based board already and had a starting point for settings.

    Wow that memory is cheap. Whilst components are generally a bit more over here (UK) in cost, I've not seen 16GB for anything like as low as that.
