Question New build memory connundrum, please help!

    Morning all,

Ok im at a loss at the moment. Ive just built a system from the parts in my sig and started getting random crashed when i had 2 sticks of 2gb G.Skill DDR2 installed. So ive been trying to troubleshoot but im getting random results from testing.....heres what ive tried using Memtest86+ v2.01.

    1 - Stick A(thought to be good) in Slot 1, 10 passes, 0 errors
    2 - Stick B(thought to be dodgy) in Slot 1, 10 passes, 0 errors
3 - Stick B in Slot 1, Stick A in Slot 3, Memtest would not run and crashed just as loading.
    4 - Stick B in Slot 2, Stick A in Slot 4, 2 passes, 1071 errors (i kid you not!!!)

Currently running Stick B in Slot 2 on its own and it seems fine (1 pass, 0 errors when i left to go to work)?

From this it seems like Slots 3 and 4 are faulty as whenever theres a stick in one of these slots Memtest fails, but im a n00b when it comes to memory testing.

Could the sticks just not be working together properly? Is there something im missing???
Any help would be highly appreciated.

They are brand new G.Skill sticks:-

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122

Im in the UK so got them from OverclockersUK.

Ive already sent the mobo back to Gigabyte once because of a corrupted BIOS which prevented post, dont really want to send it again as it cost £17($30) each time...

Any help or suggestions welcome Cheers! Buz.

Did you set Performance Enhance to Standard? And when using both or either did you manually set the voltages?

When using both you will need to add MCH voltage 1.2-1.3, make sure trfc is 52-62, manually set ram voltage, Performance Enhance to Standard, Static tRead of 7-10 For 333 MCH latch (8/9-12 for 400 MCH latch)

I havent tried any of that, just been reading through your sticky and feel a bit stupid now. I will try all setting as suggested.

Just to make sure i get the correct settings, looking at the image of the P45 BIOS in the thread, are the settings you suggest above these ones?:-

MCH Voltage = MCH Core in BIOS
RAM Voltage = DRAM Voltage in BIOS
    333 MCH Latch = (G)MCH Frequency Latch

Really sorry to be a pain, as i said im new to this part, my last build (which was my first) worked fine with no tweaking but im wanting to have a go.

Treat me as a total memory n00b, i wont be offended....

Everything is standard and set to Auto in most cases at the mo.

    Thanks again. Buz

No problems man, you are not a pain at all!

Ya, you got those right on!

Ya, 2x2 needs several things manually set to work stable. All of them to work best

If you do need more help and cannot find some settings posted for your board and ram here (Which there should be) Give me what you are using and I will advise you back >>>

Thats excellent cheers going to have a tweak with the suggested memory settings in an hour or so when im on lunch (im in the UK).

I'll record all my others settings im currently using and post back....once the memory problem is sorted im looking to get a moderate overclock for my Q6600, maybe around 3.0-3.2ghz? So any help with this would also be appreciated.

Thanks again for your help, i'd buy you a pint as compensation if i could

Yeap, I can help ya with that. The template is blank just so I can se what you are already using/changed. So when you get on your lunch or later post them and I will advise back

I may not be on until 15 hours or so from now though, so be sure to search around and you will find you some settings if you do not want to wait

I do recommend you update your BIOS And DO NOT USE @BIOS. Here is a Qflash guide >>>
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/bios...h-guide-27576/

I say that because Driving Strength profiles should be visible to you. Since they are not and if you do not want to flash you can use the hotkey to see them. Press Control + F1 on the MAIN Page of the BIOS and then go into MIT and you should find them

Can you give me a proper link to your ram? That newegg link is copied/pasted incorrect and the item numer is partial as well so I could not find the exact stick you meant. OverclockerUK link would be fine as well.

Incase it is, is this the sticks >>>

    Cheers Lsd,

Yes, thats the exact memory i have.

Using my original settings i posted, i ran through Memtest for 9 hours (11 passes) with 0 errors so those were ok for getting the memory problem sorted.

I'll flash the BIOS using a Fat32 partition on one of my HD's. Couple of questions.

    1) Is there a way of checking what BIOS its running at the moment? The latest BIOS is F12 so i'll use that.

    2) Are the settings you suggested above for the memory problem or to get the ball rolling on Overclocking? If my settings are already working ok should i just leave them as they are then move on to OC'ing?

FYI im using a Zalman CNPS9500 CPU cooler at the moment, been very happy with it but if this needs upgrading i'll gladly take suggestions onboard.

    http://www.silentpcreview.com/article267-page1.html

Cheers for your help with this. As soon as i made changes you suggested in the 2nd post in this thread it worked fine with both mem sticks.

    Thanks, Buz.

Yes, you can see what BIOS you are using now several ways. One is in the BIOS press F9, another is to run CPU-z and in the Mainboard tab you will see

The higher of the settings above are very loose, so yeah you can overclock first then tighten down your ram later which is really how you should do it

ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme is great, Xigmatek coolers are also very good. All really depends on your case.

But if you temps are good no need for a new heatsink just yet, but I guess you do have to overclock first eh!
