    Ya, looks to me like that is all you need is more volts. Then once you get your CPU Stable you can work on ram timings.

    Since you are not getting a warning in the BIOS that means you are almost there! Good job and keep at it

    Hi,

    ahh, just read "memory timings explained" post . Didn't know about the tool Memset. I will test it and see what the actual timings are now when running at 400fsb. Lets hope it works on my p45 board, seems to be a few that have problems with that...

    windows idling CPU-z report 1.2V, (0.05 lower than bios)
    running Prime CPU-z report 1.155 - 1.168 , (0.1 lower than bios)

    Thinking of setting ->

    CPU Vcore to 1.3, or maybe 1.35??? Or is it overkill?
    MCH core to 1.3???
    DRAM voltage to 2.2???
    Keep CPU PLL on statically set 1.5, since I read somewhere that you said its best so....or am I wrong here?

    What about the rest of the voltages? Auto or keep or change?

    Try setting more vcore of course but also add some vtt, maybe 1.24-1.34

    Yes keep Pll set to stock, ram will be fine at 2.. Try MCH to 1.2-1.26

    Do you also mean that I should leave the advanced ram timings on auto (as I have now when running 400fsb)?

    Yes, VTT is CPU Termination

    I said all the rest on Auto referring to your voltages as you had posted them only. Memory timings should be set manually if you feel up to it as it will give you better performance for sure. But yes, you may be able to leave them in Auto until you find your CPU overclock you want, then start working on the ram.

    YOu may need to use 555-12/15 or 544-12/15 for your main ram timings as you get up to 845+ as you are now. 444-12 usually does not go far past 800Mhz

    Default Running 433fsb (3.68GHz @ 555-12) OK

    Hi Lsdmeasap,

    You are totaly right! Now I am running 433fsb (3.68 GHz with 555-12)!

    Here is a short history of what I did :

    1) 433 fsb, increased volt (+7% VID/VTT) VID=1.3375, VTT=1.28, MCH=1.24, DRAM=2.2, Memtiming=444-12.
    Result Fail, rounding error in prime (no crash)

    2) MCH=1.26
    Result Fail, rounding error in prime (no crash)

    3) Tried to play around with the advanced timings in memset in windows
    Result Fail, rounding error in prime (no crash). Though a bit better, but a dead end.

    4) In bios, relaxed the memtiming to 555-18.
    Result OK in prime 2 hours

    5) In bios, set memtiming to 555-12.
    Result OK in prime 2 hours

    6) Wondered if it is really worth it performance wise (3.4 GHz 444-12) vs (3.68 GHz 555-12), given the increased volt?

    7)
    Tested 3dMarkVantage (cpu/graphics)
    7.1) Stock -> 11294/7792 (not overclocked 4870)
    7.2) 400fsb mem 444-12 -> 13729/9053
    7.3) 433fsb mem 555-18 -> 14720/9050
    7.4) 433fsb mem 555-12 -> 14861/9052

    8) Decided that I would stick to 433 fsb 555-12 and find a lower volt but here is the "strange thing". I couldn't really lower it that much. Tried going from (VID/VTT) 1.3375/1.28 -> 1,3125/1.26 but windows crashed.

    Do you think there is a way to lower the cpu related volt's and still be going at 433? Or is that asking to much In windows (cpu-z) the vid volt reported is 1.24 in prime and almost 1.3 in idle)

    The thing I'm having hard time to understand is the big cpu volt increase needed for going from 400fsb to 433 fsb. But maybe that's the way it is? Or is there something else that I have missed? This is the first time I overclock...and actually built my own computer, so no experience here...

    Another question as well...When I changed the VID/VTT I did that hand in hand...so that VTT never is higher than VID and that they are following each other...Is this rule valid? Or maybe I could keep a bit higher VTT and lower VID?

    I will try your suggested 544-12 timing as well, thanks for that one!

    Ya, you may not have much luck at lower voltages that is pretty low for your speed.

    You can try lower Vtt but not likely. Vtt should always be less then 1.38 for sure not matter what. But do not try to keep them always changed together. I mean you can raise vtt a bit and likely lower Vcore for better temps. Try 1.32-1.34 vtt and see if you can lower your vcore.

    Also try lower MCH and then more vtt, less vcore. That is pretty low Vcore though and yes, small jumps often mean large voltage jumps.

    All those Auto's in Ram timings are likely killing your score, so they will for sure improve once you get your CPU where you want it and set your ram timings manually

    Default lowering the memorytimings, strategy/method?

    First a recap of what have been done. In bold, at the end, the questions :-)

    I'm running at 3.68GHz (Q9550 with EP45-DS3) now and I am satisfied with the CPU speed. So I have started to work on the mem timings instead. Here is the link to the mem incase you want it ->

    I am changing one at a time (a small step) and run one pass in memtest86 in between the steps, roughly 30 mins it takes.

    Then, I tried to set both tRead to 8, big crash but bios managed to recover after a few restarts so I didn't had to clear cmos. Then I gave it another try, increasing dram volt to 2.2V (from 2.16). No luck. Stepped back dram to 2.16 and tRead to 9 and continued. Here I am now ->

    So basically, I need some advice on if I am doing this right to continue lowering the values that I can lower and still pass? Or should I loosen some timings to try to get down some other specific ones instead?

    Also, in memtest86, the speed of the mem (and L1/L2 cache) is shown. I started with a lot on auto at 4641 Mb/s, 5140 Mb/s before the tRead crash and now latest 5140 Mb/s as well. Is this a valid indicator of the performance increase?


    So far increase in memtest86 have only been seen related to these changes ->
    going from 555-12 > 544-12,
    tWTR (12->6, no diff going to 4)
    tWR (14->6->5, not diff going to 4)


    In the beginning, memtest86 took 31 minutes and now I have cut 30 seconds of the time by spending many hours of my own time . But it's ok, it fun as to tweak!!!

    Default 10 pass i memtest ok (5 hours)

    Hi LSDmeasap,

    First of all, thanks for the help so far It feels like I have got quite far with the overclocking and now its just a few steps left...

    Just wanted to mention that the below bios settings passed memtest86, 10 passes (5 hours).

    As I mentioned before, the cpu speed I am happy with. Do you have any suggestions on how to continue on the memory performance? (I have not reached fail yet (exept 444-12) while going down the mem timings. Which ones do you think I should continue to lower? I mean some are quite low allready, or? The tRead I cant lower, then it crashes.

    Update, I ran Everest and got these figures ->

    read write copy latency
    mem 8021 9177 8491 63.8
    L1 58861 58710 117408 0.8
    L2 26603 19802 28480 4.6

    I have been testing with 3dMarkVantage but I don't see big differences any longer...

    Tested 3dMarkVantage performance level (cpu/graphics)

    3) 433fsb mem 555-18 + rest auto -> 14720/9050
