Unhappy GA-EP45-UD3R won't POST with Sounblaster X-Fi Please help

As it is my very first post on this forum I'd like to say hello to everybody.

    Now, there's my problem:

today's arrived my fresh new GA-EP45-UD3R. After I finish to set up my rig it won't POST (blank screen, no error beep, no nothing). Eventually it boot after I've removed my Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Music (PCI) off the system. I did encounter such a problem for a very first time (I build PCs myself for about 16 yrs).

The Sounblaster is OK, as I checked it in my friend's machine. It's been working flawlessly in my previous 2 rigs.

The PC boot with other PCI card inserted in the PCI slot.

I tried all 3 slots - all the same.

Have no idea how to proceed further.

Any help would be much aprecciated.

    Sorry for my bad English.

I think those are not compatible with P45/43 boards especially the older cards, I have seen this a few times recently those users switched to or were suggested these cards >>>
    Asus Xonar DX
    HT Omega Claro

It is also a Known issue with Vista SP1 as well, but since you are not that far yet that doesn't matter.

What you can try is manually assigning a IRQ to the card in the PnP/PCI Page of the BIOS, You will need to push Control + F1 on the MAIN page of the BIOS before you go into that section to see the manual IRQ settings.

Good luck, let me know if I can help you anymore with this

Thank you for your kind advice.

After I removed the X-Fi I managed to install Vista SP1 with no problem. I don't think it could be OS related as the PC doesn't POST at all with the Soundblaster in.

The issue seems to me to be specific to this very mainboard, as the card's been working flawlessly on Asus' P5Q PRO.

I've already been thinking about IRQ conflict, so your suggestion only made me sure it could be that issue - maybe the BIOS is unable to properly assign an IRQ for the SB.

Anyway, I'll follow your advice. Could you please provide more detailed howto (I didn't assign an IRQ manually for that long - relying on PnP) so I'm not sure which particular IRQ may be safe to assign and how to do it reasonably and safely.
I noticed in BIOS (PnP PCI) when I point at e.g. PCI 3 I can see other devices on the right pane - bit confusing (won't cause any further conflicts).

hmmm... I think the soundblaster x-fi is a relatively new soundcard. Did lighthouse first disable the unboard sound? Would this perhaps cause the conflict?

Yes, I did disable the onboard Azalia - it didn't change anything.

X-Fi is about '2005, odd enough I tried '2002 3COM NIC and it didn't cause any problem whatsoever.

Following Lsdmeasap advice I've been playing for a while with PnP/PCI settings - I reserve IRQ 7 then I insert the Soundblaster and my PC boot normally. My joy didn't last for much long - after a reboot the PC didn't POST, so I had to remove the SB.
It seems to me as BIOS issue.
The question is - can I resolve it myself or it have to be done by a BIOS update.

I really do want the SB to work (tried Xonar already and well... no).

First, could you confirm I proceed properly - I mean all I need to do is to change PnP/PCI assignment from Auto to Manual and then go to IRQ tab and change one of IRQ from Auto to Reserved?

    Answering your question - I tried IRQ 5 - it doesn't help.

After I change anything (even I enable/disable Azalia) I can notice in last POST table the BIOS reassign new IRQs for all devices. It did help once as I wrote previously - the PC did boot, so did Vista, the SB was recognized and 'new device found' pop-up appeared. But after reboot the PC didn't POST.

Lsdmeasap, how do you think basing on your knowledge and experience - could it be solved or should I start to think about giving up my PCI X-Fi, which means I have to go PCIe X-Fi?

Ya, that is how you do it. Try a different IRQ that is not used by anything else. But yes, in the end you may need to use a different card

Thanks Lsdmeasap, I appreciate your help.

I'll try different IRQ, however, I do not expect much. What IRQ would you suggest (if I'm not wrong there are 3-15 available)?

Anyway, it's a bit strange one has do play like this with manual settings nowadays.

Maybe there's some guy directly from Gigabyte on this forum who could present an official statement regarding my issue?
