Default Underclocked CPU & Memory and memtest still fails.

Hello all. Let me start off by saying I'm a noob.

    Here are my specs
    X48-DS4
    Core-2-Duo E8400
    2x2 Gb G.Skill Pi 1066Mhz 5-5-5-15 memory
    2x Radeon HD4850

I would like to know if I have a dud motherboard.

It runs stable if I don't change anything in the bios, but, if I raise the FSB to around 400ish, and lower the CPU multiplier and memory multiplier (so they are both under-clocked), memtest fails within 3-12 minutes. It does not fail with default settings.

I have the memory at 2.1V and MCH voltage as +0.1V, and FSB raised very slightly, PCI locked at 100Mhz, speedstep and all that yada disabled. Memory timing manually set to 5-5-5-15 (since the board randomly seems to decide what timings it wants to set when left on auto).

CPU temperature nominal, system temperature around 44C in bios.

Should I just give up on overclocking?

Also, what do the letters next to the memory multiplier mean? i.e. 2.00A, 2.66C, 2.66D, etc. etc.

I also had some Crucial ballistix tracer RAM which didn't even pass memtest on its rated 5-5-5-15 (did pass on auto though), so I replaced that under the belief that crucial ram and gigabyte boards don't mix well.

One more thing, everytime I'm loading up vista, at exactly the same moment everytime, I hear a clicking noise, like a switch. What is that?

    Try MCH 1.26

Have you tested this ram at stock with Performance enhance set on Standard to be sure both sticks are not faulty?

Trfc also should be set to 52-62, but I almost am sure you probably have performance enhance set to Turbo right? It is the default, set that to standard.

The letters are Northbridge Straps, you want B or D

I am doing some quick testing right now, and have two pages of posts to answer but I will help you will full settings once I get all that out of the way. Hopefully tonight for sure.

Please also use the latest BIOS, DO NOT USE @BIOS to update it either. Here is a Qflash guide >>>

Here would be your optimal settings for the ram and FSB at 402, CPU and voltages are all up to your chip >>>>

Hi, Thank you, I will give that a try, I had actually set performance enhance, graphics accelerator, etc. to standard to begin with. When I tried turning it to "turbo" (with everything else at default), windows would not even load.

Thanks, it will take me a couple of days before I have time to sort it out, so I'll report back soon. But I noticed that with the memory multiplier you specified, my 1066 ram will be running at 800?

That click is likely your board trying to make a "Good Boot" Sound, do you not have a case speaker? If so that is why

Ya, sorry about that ram speed, use this for 1069 >>>
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [2.66D]

You would need a different FSB to use the B strap, or you could use it now 2.40B which would give you 960 ram speed

Thanks, just to let you know, I still haven't found time to muck around with it. Just posting for the sake of posting as I don't want this thread to dissapear into oblivion somewhere.

And I found out what the clicking noise is, it's the sound-card!

One other thing, I recently replaced the PSU (didn't appreciate the fan noise), on my old PSU, the computer ALWAYS shut-down 1 second after powering up, then powered up again without worry. With the new PSU, it powers up first time EVERY time. What's going on there? THe old PSU was a Coolermaster 650W, the new one is an Antech Earthwatts 500W.

Ahh, so is the card going bad you think?

Sounds like the old PSU was not as good or possibly going faulty?

And hey, you can always go in your profile and find your thread incase you loose one, just so you know, I dont care about a thread bump just thought I would point that out to you incase you did not know
