    Default Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L Rev1.0

i recently put together a rig with the following specs

    Processor: Intel E6600 SL9S8 Rev.B2
    RAM: 2x2GB Corsair XMS2-6400C5 @ 1.8V
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L Rev1.0 (recieved with F3 bios; flashed to F4/F5A)
Graphics Card: Palit HD 4850 512MB
    PSU: Corsair TX650W

    Bios Settings:
    Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]
    CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [8]
Fine Clock Ratio ____________[+0.5] Option Not Available
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [341]
PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100] Cannot set to 100 above 341Mhz FSB
    C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [2.00]
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Manual]
    memory frequency (mhz) 800 818
    Performance Enhance = [Standard]

    CAS Latency Time________________ 5
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________ 5
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay_______ 5
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________ 18

ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 5
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 9
    Write to Precharge Delay_________ 6
    Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 55
    Read to Precharge Delay__________ 6
    Static tRead Value_______________ 8
    Static tRead Phase Adjust________ [Auto]

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
    DDR2 OverVoltage Control___ +0.1
    PCI-E OverVoltage Control___ +0.1
    FSB OverVoltage Control___ +0.1
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control___ +0.1
    CPU Voltage Control_______ [1.32500]

Limit CPUID Max. to 3.....................: [Disabled]
    No-Execute Memory Protect............: [Enabled]
    CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)................: [Disabled]
CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2) ...........: [Enabled]
    CPU EIST Function.........................: [Disabled]
    Virtualization Technology.................: [Disabled]

My problem lies with the "PCI Express frequency" settings which can be locked at 100 only upto 341Mhz on the FSB. Any higher and the system defaults to Disabled on the CPU Host Clock Control. Recieved the board with the F3 bios and flashed to F4 and F5a. Results are the same. Is it advisable to OC the FSB with "PCI Express Frequency" set to "Auto" on this particular motherboard even though it is advised against by popular opinion?

    Thanks:)

Something else is likely resetting you to defaults, not that setting

Such as volts, you may need more cpu volts, and you for sure need more MCH Volts. I would also set your ram to +.1 for 1.9V to be for sure stable as well

The resr of your settings do not look to be a issue, but the above mentioned things will for sure get you stable. Check with CPU-z and see what voltage you get for the CPU voltage set in the BIOS as it may not be enough. But first you should set the other voltages I mention and see if that gets you going.

When you flash, you do load/save/apply/reboot optimized defaults right? If not, that could be your issue as well as you MUST do this

I did as you suggested but the mobo still won't OC over 341Mhz FSB with "PCI Express frequency" set to "Auto". The GA-EP31-DS3L Rev1.00 says there are more options available such as "OC FSB 1600 CPU" and "Fine Clock CPU Ratio". But neither did the F3 bios nor the F4/F5a bios report those controls. Even the POST screen picture of the GA-EP31-DS3L used as reference in the manual clearly indicates that the bios used is "D6" and not F1/F3/F4.

    Revised BIOS settings:
    Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]
    CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [8]
Fine Clock Ratio ____________[+0.5] Option Not Available
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [341 - 350 - 375 - 399 - 400] 2.8 - 3.2 - 3.0 - 3.19 - 3.2 Ghz
PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100] Cannot set to 100 above 341Mhz FSB
    C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [2.40/2.0] 2.40 @ 341 FSB Only/ 2.0 @350/375/399/400 FSB
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Manual]
    memory frequency (mhz)_______800_______818(341)/700(350)/798(399)/800(400)
    Performance Enhance = [Standard]

Timings Lowered from 5 to 6
    CAS Latency Time________________ 6
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________ 6
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay_______ 6
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________ 20

ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 5
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 9
    Write to Precharge Delay_________ 6
    Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 55
    Read to Precharge Delay__________ 6
    Static tRead Value_______________ 8
    Static tRead Phase Adjust________ [Auto]

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
    DDR2 OverVoltage Control___ +0.1
    PCI-E OverVoltage Control___ +0.2/0.3 (0.3V Max)
FSB OverVoltage Control___ +0.2/0.3 (0.3V Max)
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control___ +0.2/0.3 (0.3V Max)
    CPU Voltage Control_______ [1.35000/1.40000/1.42500/1.45000]

Limit CPUID Max. to 3.....................: [Disabled]
    No-Execute Memory Protect............: [Enabled]
    CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)................: [Disabled]
CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2) ...........: [Enabled]
    CPU EIST Function.........................: [Disabled]
    Virtualization Technology.................: [Disabled]

Tried a number of combinations and all of them were successful from 341 Mhz FSB all the way to 400Mhz FSB ONLY if "PCI Express Frequency" is set to "Auto". Lock it at "100" and the OC Controls get Disabled while the CPU defaults to 266x8 = 2.13Ghz. Is the D6 bios, as shown in the manual, available for download from any of your servers?

P.S. - I followed the manual instructions when flashing the bios.

your CPU does not support fine clock ratio. You would only need 400 CPU Freq to run 1600 FSB, which your board an CPU will do

Like I said before set that to 100 PCI-E and when you say it resets at 341, that is because of other settings failed, not that one setting. Like you need more CPU volts and then your Overclock will not fail. That is what resets it, not the setting itself

Can you specify the settings for me to try out? I'll try yours and post the results after.

    Thanks

For 400 FSB I would try this >>>>

    Revised BIOS settings:
    Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]
    CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [8]
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [402]
    PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100]
    C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [2.00B]
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Manual]
    memory frequency (mhz)_______804

    Performance Enhance = [Standard]

    CAS Latency Time________________5
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________ 5
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay_______ 5
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________ 15/18

ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 3-4
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 3-6
    Write to Precharge Delay_________ 4-6
    Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 52-62
    Read to Precharge Delay__________ 3-6
    Static tRead Value_______________ 7-12
    Static tRead Phase Adjust________ [Auto]

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
DDR2 OverVoltage Control___ +0.1 (What is your ram's rated amount? Are you sure it is 1.8V does it say that on the sticker? If so then +.1 is fine, if it says 2.0-2.1 you will need to try +.2-.3

    PCI-E OverVoltage Control___ +0.1
    FSB OverVoltage Control___ +0.1
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control___ +0.2/0.3 (0.3V Max)
CPU Voltage Control_______ [1.35000/1.40000/1.42500/1.45000] << You will need to find your CPU's sweet spot, maybe 1.400-1.425 or so +/-. Maybe less, just set high enough to for sure boot then you can lower later

Limit CPUID Max. to 3.....................: [Disabled]
    No-Execute Memory Protect............: [Enabled]
    CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)................: [Disabled]
CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2) ...........: [Enabled]

When you say minimum, do you mean setting wise or it wont boot lower?

maybe you should update your BIOS or load optimized defaults again and start over
