    Unhappy System Freezing Constantly GA-EP45-DS3L

    Specs:
    HIS Radeon 4850 512 MB
    Corsair 2x2GB (4 GB) memory 5-5-5-18 and 1.8 Volts (CM2X2048-6400C5 version 3.1)
    E8400 @3.0 GHz
    640GB WD Caviar Blue
    EP45-DS3L (Bios @ F6 @ near optimized defaults)
    Corsair 650W PSU
    Vista Ultimate (64-bit)

    I am at my wit's end with this system. It has been freezing ever since I built it, in BIOS and in Windows. HDD and PSU have been replaced. The system seems a bit more stable in BIOS and in Windows after I removed one of the 2 gig sticks of mem, but memtest still freezes. Now it gets to the first test, about 8 percent before it freezes. Before the system was freezing during normal browsing. I couldn't get past a certain link if i scrolled down, and the system would randomly freeze on events, such as clicking buttons/icons, running programs, installing drivers, etc. I'm willing to reformat my HDD as there is nothing really installed yet. I am hoping the issues could be fixed through BIOS tweaking, but I am a complete novice when it comes to BIOS. Thank you in advance for your help!

    Just managed to update windows vista. Attempted to run memtest again, but froze up before giving me any errors.

    First off, you are using the latest Memtest 2.1 or at least 2.01 correct? You must use these versions for P45 >>>

    Are you sure one or both of your sticks are not faulty? Sounds like they may indeed be.

    This is how you should test each one by one before you try to go any further as DOA ram gets shipped out often. Test each stick at stock in slot one. To do this, set performance enhance to Standard (May be your whole issue as Turbo is default) then set your MAIN timings to stock, set your memory Multi to 2.40B leaving MCH latch on Auto, set your ram voltage to spec (I see 1.8 you list, I'd go ahead and set 1.9 anyway here to be sure)

    And then see if Memtest86+ will run for each stick. If not you may have faulty sticks.

    To use both, if that helps you and both test out good, you will need to set several things in the BIOS. Here would be optimal ranges for your setup at stock, with the BOLD items needing to for sure be set for 2x2GB to be stable >>>>

    Thanks for the reply. I was using an in-windows memtest. Hopefully it is indeed just some faulty ram and I'll just steal a new pair from a friend or something. I'll report back with my findings. I also plan to let a friend swap mem with me to make sure it's the memory at fault and not the slots.

    The test froze at 97% through Test 4. Walltime stuck at 9:35, but the little red cross was still blinking next to "Memtest". Keyboard was totally locked up, however. No errors were reported before the freeze. This is only for one stick. I'm going to test the other stick in the same slot.

    Before I went to the 2nd stick, ran the 1st stick again and it froze even earlier in test 4(in the 35% range) wall time stuck at 4:47. Going to try the 2nd stick now.

    2nd Stick
    Froze at 1% of Test #5. Wall time stuck at 9:31. 0 errors reported. I'll retest the same stick again.

    Tried to run both sticks. Froze while changing bios. Going to be running things with one stick from now on.
    Also i noticed that the wall time wasn't going up at a constant rate. It would have spurts where it would be like 1..2..3.....4.5..6....7..8... so on until it froze. Is that normal?

    Corsair tech support (ram guy) suggests that having freeze-ups with both sticks before errors would suggest a motherboard/bios issue.

    What is your full exact settings you are trying to use when you are doing one stick tests? Please fill this out with your exact settings and we well see. Ya, freeze is incorrect settings normally. >>>>

    Are you using the latest BIOS? If so did you load and apply/save/reboot after you flashed?

    If so, try the hotkey. On the MAIN Page of the BIOS hit control + F1 and then go into MIT and see if you can find that.

    But really, sounds to me from those settings that single sticks should for sure pass if they are not faulty. You are using the newest Memtest86+ right? 2.0-2.1, older versions will not work properly

    Does it do the same if you use Auto here >>>
    DRAM Voltage ……....1.800V............:1.9

    What does Static tRead show on the left for both channels? And all other advanced subtimings in auto such as trd same/diff rank, cmd clock pull downs and all those like that?

    What does Memset show for static tread in windows (Performance level) with Auto as well, just to see if what you see on the left is being used or not as often it is not >>>

    Sometimes in auto is may not show in windows, so we may just have to go by what is shown in the BIOS. If it is too low you may need to change it

    I'm on campus right now, so I'll have to double check the settings when I get back home. I'm going to swap my 2x2gigs for 2x1gig corsair sticks today with a friend. Still going to try running with 1 stick first, as I had significant stability increase after taking out the 2nd stick.
    I'm currently running bios F6. the latest is F10, but i was afraid of flashing for fear of freezing during the flashing process. I'll attempt to flash it today if I still can't run memtest on the 1gig stick(s). I'm running memtest 2.10, the latest one as of yesterday.

    When DRAM voltage is set to auto, the value on the left shows 1.8V

    Static tRead for both channels is 7, I believe, but I'll check if it changes or update with new values for the other advanced timing settings when i put in the 1gig stick(s).
    I'll try run memset when I get home, as well.

    Overall, I seem to be able to browse the internet and apply system updates without any hitches. The only freezing that I've seen is when I try to test the memory using the free version of memtest I got off google's 1st result and memtest86 2.10. I'll update soon.

    Guys, don't forget the reduction of MCH core voltage from 1.10v to 1.05v has brought absolute stability to many users of this board with 2x2gb RAM.
