That is only half the solution. Yes, setting them as sides will get them working in windows, however with a lot of software specificly looking for REAR and not SIDE when set to 4.1, the rear speakers are not going to work.

Unfortunately, it's a realtek'ism the way it is implemented. It's not exactly normal, but its not technicly wrong either. The drivers have been set up the same way so long that it's not going to change. The only REAL solution is to

    a) downgrade to a normal pair of stereo speakers

    b) upgrade to a full more propper 5.1 set of speakers

    c) get a different sound card

    d) use the generic microsoft sound driver

    ....in no particular order.

The Realtek setup is qwirky. The following might help.
I selected the 7.1 configuration and physically hooked up the rear speakers to one of the jacks closest to the mobo. Using the Realtek I/O configuration panel I then manually set the speakers to REAR. As I recall, the only drawback was that the Realtek sound test didn't work on the rear speakers unless I set my Logitech controller to 6-channel discrete.

I'm currently running with the 5.1 configuration with my rear speakers connected to the SIDE speaker jack. I don't have any applications that require my rear speakers to be configured as such.

    Hope this helps.
