Thread: No sound from surround rear spekars in 4 ch mode REALTEK (ds5,ds6)

Default No sound from surround rear spekars in 4 ch mode REALTEK (ds5,ds6)

    Hello Friends,

I figured out the problem, but not the solution :

    Any ideas welcome !

    Speaker setup up is :
front speakers and rear speakers settings in the connection menu popup. (black output is the rear, the front is green /below black/)

If you set-up 4 ch mode in settings, REAR speakers are muted.
Becauase in this channel mode there the 4 speaker means 2 FRONT and two SIDE speakers. What the hell ?!

If you set to 8 ch mode, you will hear the same speakers as REAR speakers, as it's should be.
But in this case you will not get the correct 4 ch sound, because for example monoaural center sound will not be hear in the front speakers.

This is really confusing situation. Why 4 ch mode according to side speakers, I don't know, but totally unusable the onboard sound card to enjoy full 4 ch speaker setup.

    Best Regards,
    Pubem

Just move your Speakers to the "Side ports" and use 4 channel as you wanted to

    Hi,

As I know, in 4 ch mode it should be a rear speaker, not side.

But, you should right, because I checked the screen of the speakers in 6 ch mode, (typical 5.1 setup) , and there is sub and center over 4 ch setup, and there is no rear speakers.

BTW it's not standard: Side speakers should exist only at 7.1 system.

In that manner, side speakers as you said I must give not side effects, but real back (rear) sound. (independently from that we called it side or rear speakers)

Sorry for my english today :-)

    Thank you for response !

    Have a nice trip :-)

Hmm, Well have you tried the latest RealTek driver, direct from realtek? If not try these >>>

I can confirm this as well. I do have the latest drivers, and have had the latest drivers since getting this board hoping that with each new release it would be corrected, but it is still not.

With quad setup, the realtek drivers do in fact consider it front + side and not the standard front + rear. It is VERY annoying. Sure, it is simple enough just to retask the rears as side speakers, but this also does away with any "speaker fill" type options as well as making the rears completely useless in a lot of situations where they would normally be used. A few software titles seem to be able to make use of the side channels as rears when set to quad, while others will not which I am guessing is due to the software specificly looking for rear channels to output to and not side.

It's should def be a driver thing as using the generic microsoft HD audio driver sets the rear as rear, and does get you true quad sound in situations where using the realtek driver with it's side speaker quad setup will not.

I would send a letter off to RealTek and see what their reply about this is since they make the driver. Just a thought, they may be unaware of the issue

I doubt they would do anything about it. It's not a flaw so much as simply the way they decided to impliment it. I mean if you think about a propper surround sound setup.....5.1 is your 3 up front, sub, and 2 SIDES......6.1 same + 1 rear......7.1 same + another rear....so in that aspect they are totally correct. Where there may be some differing opionion is quad/4.1. It's pretty clear Realtek considers quad as 4.1 the same as 5.1 minus the center channel, while others and some software don't consider quad as true 'standard' surround format at all thus simply front and rear speakers. So really, sides or rear, there is a valid arguement for both. I think setting them as rear would be the more correct/compatible way to go about it, but Realtek implimenting them as side speakers are no less correct also, technicly.

Haha, I remember when I first built my rig with a UD3P about a month ago it took me awhile to figure out what was happening. The differences between companies can be strange (as seen by this and how some Mobo / Addin card companies do their front USB wiring) In my Asus A7N8X Deluxe Soundstorm control panel 5.1 was: 2 Front 1 Center/Sub 2 Rear, along with my old Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Gamer and Audigy 1 Gamer.

I've gotten used to my Realtek HD chip though, I haven't had a single issue with any game and as long as you have Dolby Pro Logic II checked off you'll also have 5.1 in non 5.1 Audio which is great.

This onboard really is a huge step up from my nforce 2's Soundstorm it's like night and day watching 5.1 series/movies and playing games using my Turtle Beach HPA2 5.1 Headset.

It's not a bug, it's an unintentioned design feature (UDF).
As a former programmer I NEVER had bugs, but an occasional UDF would sometimes show up.
