Ahh well Auto using 2.40 is on the 333/B strap. You can see above that is the only strap with a 2.40 multi on it so it had to be that one. 400 FSB does not necessarily mean any certain strap is needed or used

Here is examples of each strap and it's associated letters (Symbols on some boards) Pay no attention to the "On your board" comments, I made that out for a user a while back as a example >>>

    Yes 2.00x is always 1:1

What the straps are is NB Speeds and timings. At a lower strap tighter NB timings are used and may be better performance/less stable, higher strap would be less performance/more stable

Here is some more info about that (Be sure to read the "For Noobs" link as it is explained very simply in that link >>>

Hmmm, interesting, thanks for the info and links. So, if I insist on a B/333 strap, I must use a 3.20B to get to my memory's rated 1066MHz. Oh well...

Anyway, if I understand correctly, especially from graph on thetechrepository post, if I were to use a 200 or a 266 NB/GMCH strap I may end up over clocking the NB/GMCH by a bit too much if my FSB is 333.

Now maybe I should really go bug Gigabyte's tech support for my 3.20B... :)

By the way, the following memory multiplier settings are missing on the EG45M-DS2H BIOS:

    200 strap
    (all there, none missing)

    266 strap
    4.00A

    333 strap
    3.20B
    4.00B

    400 strap
    2.66D
    3.33D

On further thoughts, since doru got his OCZ working using the 4.00C of the 200 strap using a CPU with 266 FSB, there may be a chance that I could get mine working using 3.00A on the 266 GMCH strap, with my default 333 CPU FSB, that will clock the memory at 1000MHz, but I could have sworn that I tried this before and it didn't work. Let me pay close attention to all the latencies and voltages this time. Will report back... hopefully the G45 onboard video is not that picky.

In fact, this could be the reason's for doru's unexpected video display behaviour as the GMCH is being overclocked.

Gigabyte tech support just replied, interestingly they said the "missing" multipliers is because the G45 can only support 800MHz for DDR2, and that's according to the chipset datasheet. Okay, so, Gigabyte plays by the book eh... wow! :p

Anyway, they said that in order to get to 1066MHz memory speed, I need to overclock my CPU a bit to 355MHz FSB and use the 3.00A multiplier. Well, using the 3.00A is in my plan, except that I have to get it to work at 333 FSB first.

Ahh, nice to see you got a reply! I was beginning to wonder after seeing your post of all the missing multipliers

Sounds like you will just have to use 3.00A as suggested or get a 445 FSB and use 2.40B

Good luck, and please do let me know if you need some help getting your FSB up there

445 FSB, oh wow, my original intention is *not* to overclock the CPU under normal usage, just need the memory to be faster or closer to their rated speed, but then who on earth would buy an oh-so-overclockable E8600 and run it at the factory-recommended 333x10 (me, for one!)... very tempting proposition, but I would need a bit more cooling on the CPU to run at 4.45GHz.

Will report back my trials after this weekend, and that's if I can make it to my weekend home, pretty hectic schedule.

Use 445x9 on your CPU and 2.40B for the ram. But yeah, 4Ghz is not too likely on stock cooling, at least not likely to stay very cool

Or just use stock 333 FSB and 3.0A as you said, or somewhere in between with another Multi

Lsdmeasap, have managed to try out a few settings over the weekend, here's the result, note that CPU is kept at stock 333 x 10 in all cases:

    Case 1:
    2.66C/200 strap - 889MHz
    3.00A/266 strap - 1000MHz
    3.33C/200 strap - 1111MHz
All the above settings either failed to boot at all or managed to POST but ended up with black screen in Vista (with the HDD still running now and then), even with MCH core voltage at up to the max allowed in the BIOS, which is 1.400V in blazing red.
Other settings (basically to meet my memory spec of 5-5-5-15 2T at 1066MHz at 2.1V):
    Performance Enhance: Standard
    Timings: 5-5-5-15
    Command Rate: 2T
    All other DRAM timings: Auto
    Driving Strength: 1066
    DRAM Voltage: 2.1V (2.2V when attempting 3.33C)

    Case2:
I have sort of given up, I think the G45 onboard video plays a major part in getting the memory *not* to work at higher speeds. As a last resort I tried this:
    2.50A/266 strap - 833MHz
And, it worked, albeit at just a miserable 4.2% improvement in memory speed. I managed to get it to work at the exact same timings and voltages as at 2.40B/800MHz, which is 4-4-4-12 2T 2.0V DRAM, 1.2V MCH.

Also, for the Performance Enhance, I changed between Standard and Extreme, both also worked at 2.50A/833MHz. This time I noted the Static tRead values:
    2.40B/800MHz - Standard: 5
    2.40B/800MHz - Extreme: 7
    2.50A/833MHz - Standard: 5
    2.50A/833MHz - Extreme: 7

Not sure why the Extreme setting has a bigger number for Static tRead, but I noticed, on Memset, that the timings are tighter at Extreme vs Standard.

Hmm, well set those extreme vs standard settings manually then.

All timings in auto is likely why all your first posts tests failed.
