    Hello Everyone -

    First time poster, first time building a PC, first time overclocking!

    I just spent the last week building a new PC to replace my aging (5-6 yrs old) home computer. I'm a photographer and the PC is going to be used solely for photo editing and storage (Photoshop CS4 + Bridge, Lightroom 2.1, Capture One 4, etc... no games). I want the computer to be fast but don't want to sacrifice longevity or stability - I'll be using this same computer 3-4 years from now.

    I've done a lot of reading and research, including the stickies here, and have gotten what I hope is a good baseline 24/7 overclock at 3.6Ghz. It tests totally stable on Prime95 for 12 hours. Here's the specs which I have set in the BIOS:

    I am SURE that I don't want to go beyond 3.6Ghz for this system, given how long I want it to last. My priorities are definitely more toward stability and component longevity rather than ultimate performance. So here are my questions...

    1. What specs should I be looking to tweak to enhance stability/longevity and to increase the efficiency of the system?


    (i.e. run faster and more stable w/o more voltage or higher temps?)

    2. Is there any place I can reduce voltage?

    (I was thinking maybe CPU VCore + CPU Term, but Vdroop already has it at 1.26 under load)

    3. On the HWMonitor readout (see image), I'm getting two readings I think are glitches: a strange TMPIN0 max temperature spike, and low +12V readings. Should I be concerned about these?

    (+12v readings in the BIOS seem fine. TMPIN0 temp seems to hold in the 30-40's under Prime95 load, with just a blip up to 80 degrees while I was away from the computer. Never actually saw the active temperature readings at 80)

    Anyhow, I basically want to fine tune the setup and then leave it alone for the next few years. Any input on what I should do before calling it "done" would be much appreciated.

    Okay... one more update. It appears that while I'm Prime95 stable, I'm getting some quirky things while using the computer.

    When playing iTunes in the background and browsing the web - then going to launch CS4, I get a momentary mouse freeze and the music does a horrendous sounding digital skip.

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

    Well for best performance you should set all your ram timings yourself, auto is for sure not the best at all.

    Voltages all look good, and like you say can't likely be lowered much. Maybe ram to 2.05 or 2.0. Gotta link to your ram? Thanks

    I would advise you use something else other then HWMonitor. Like everest ultimate, then you will not see such crazy ouputs

    About your last post issue. Do you have all the latest Chipset and sound drivers installed? Are you using the onboard sound?

    Do you have one or two hard drives? I ask that because if you have two you should move your CS4 scratch disk to the other drive your OS is not on

    If you want suggested optimal ram settings let me know and I will post them for you, but I need a link to your ram. You can leave them in auto if you like, but it for sure would not be best and you asked about tweaking for performance so I thought I should point that out.

    Thanks for the reply!

    I am using the onboard sound, just plain single line audio output (no 5.1 or anything). I believe all the drivers are current, but will double check when I get home.

    I'm running 3 hard drives - WD 150GB Velociraptor for OS/Programs, WD 250GB internal IDE drive for CS4 scratch disk and Lightroom catalog/preview files, WD 640GB internal SATA drive for storage of image files. I disabled AAM on the 640GB drive using a Hitachi Disk Utility to improve performance. I also have the Windows virtual memory/paging file disabled for better performance (is this a good idea?).

    My ram is 4 x 2GB G.SKILL 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Memory, model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK. Recommended voltage is 2.0-2.1v, recommended timings of 5,5,5,15.

    I'm not opposed to backing things off slightly to 3.4GHz/400FSB if that will help improve stability. I tried that briefly and it seemed to help with the music playback issue.

    No, I would for sure at least keep a 2-4GB page file with min and max size the same, even though you have plenty of ram alot of programs need the page file to function properly

    For 8Gb of ram I would actually use a 4 or 6GB page file

    You may be able to use 2.0-.205 for your ram, but maybe not with 8Gb it may need the whole 2.1
