Default GA-EP31-DS3L rev1.0 Cannot change settings.

    Hi,

Ive had my EP31 for a few months now, when I first got it I had the problem where my ram was 2.1v and the board was setting it to 1.9v so I could not overclock. After I solved that I could OC to 2.8ghz no problem, it was stable at 3.1ghz but got a bit hot.

Recently I had some issues compiling a program with gcc, so I thought maybe it was the overclock, so I turned off the CPU Host Clock Control. It ended up another program was making the errors so I tried to turn back on the Clock control but it did not work anymore. No matter what settings I choose the machine just reboots and defaults back to defaults after I save/exit the bios.

I have tried clearing the CMOS, and loading optimized defaults and set ram voltage to +0.2v. But I still cannot even turn on CPU Host Clock Control even with no fsb settings changed! Even leaving Clock control off and changing PCIe setting to 100mhz from auto will cause the machine to go into endless reboot and I have to clear the cmos.

    My machine is.
    CPU: E2220
Ram: 2 gb Corsair XMS2-6400 DHX
    Video: Asus 8600gt
    PSU: 650W High Power

I have also tried updating to the bios to 5a from 4 and it did not help. I have tried everything I did the first time around, its driving me crazy. Is there anything else that could be wrong?

+0.3 is 2.1V, maybe that is your issue? Not sure as I cannot see all the rest, Auto if you are using it on things may be setting something too low.

Please link me to your ram, and tell me if it is 2x1GB or just a single 2GB stick. Then please post for me your exact settings you are using and I will see if I can help >>>

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

I have tried +0.3 for ram also, but It was previously running fine at 0.2v (bios reports ~2.070v). The ram is Corsair XMS2 6400 DHX as I said, it is 2 x 1gb kit (Welcome to Corsair :: XMS2 DHX Product Information). Currently in slots 2/4 I have tried 1/3 also.
I have even tried removing one of the chips and just using slot 1, and then swapping the chips. Ive run memtest for 24hrs with no errors. Computer passes 24hrs prime 95. Current temps according to sensors are Cores (1/2) 42deg, Chipset 27deg, Cpu sensor 27deg.

I can post the template, but as I said I am currently unable to even use the bios defaults (Minus ram voltage being changed to +0.2/3) and just turn on Host Clock Control with the FSB/Multi un-changed. I am not even trying to overclock at the moment, just trying to turn on CPU Host Clock Control, even still I have tried to put up the voltages, and as before leaving everything default and changing PCIe from Auto to 100mhz causes the machine to reboot endlessly, I have to clear the cmos.

PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [Auto] Setting to 100 with Clock control
    off will cause continuous reboots.

Default [solved] GA-EP31-DS3L rev1.0 Cannot change settings.

Ok problem solved. You must have the SATA setting to enhanced, or have an IDE drive plugged in or it will not overclock!!!!! Big BIOS bug IMO.

Before these problems I had an 80gb drive plugged in just to store some data while I updated my Linux install after installing the new EP31 mobo. This was removed when I was testing the machine due to the gcc errors... since then I could not change CPU Host Clock Control.

Now I just goto the BIOS and change SATA mode from [auto] to [enhanced] and it all works, running at 333x9 FSB/Multi, +0.2v DDR2, +0.1 FSB/MCH, 1.35v CPU. Such a stupid problem.

Hmm.. Glad to see you found that out and got it fixed now. Please do Send a report of this bug to tech support so they may try to get that fixed in the next BIOS release >>>

Glad to hear you are running smoothly now! I would have likely never guessed that for sure!

Just ran in to this bug on my brand new system, any tweaks I tried to make to the settings would result in the system not booting (well, would get to the bios about one boot in ten attempts).

Changed the sata to enhanced and am now testing my first overclock step, all looking good.
