Thread: WTB: Memory

  1. #1

    Default WTB: Memory

Was thinking about buying some new ram but I'm at a loss. Was looking at some mushkin DDR2 800

    Newegg.com - mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146731

    I'm not sure if to go DDR2 800 OR DDR2 1000 OR DDR2 1066

My current Setup is this :

    Intel Pentium e5200 @ 3.9Ghz (390x10)
    Giga-byte GA-EP35-DS3L
    2GB DDR2 @ 780Mhz 4-4-4-12 @ +0.2
    Radeon x1950pro 512MB
    Seagate 160GB @ 7200rpm
    SB Audigy2
    Corsair 520HX
    Super Antec Lanboy
    Vista Ultimate SP1 64bit
    Acer AL2216Wbd 22"

Someone please advise what RAM will be the best for my system.

Well FWIW here in jolly old UK I bought 2 x 1GB Geil Black Dragon DDR2 1066 PC2 8500C2. They are warranteed to 2.4v and 1066MHz @ 5-5-5-15, and will go faster - I've had them up to about 1100MHz. They were the cheapest 1066MHz I found. I'm very happy with them.

I've been told that 1066MHz modules are just 800MHz ones that have been binned as better quality. From the SPD data in mine that appears to be the case. If you buy 800MHz modules they may go just as fast, or they might not. With 1066MHz modules you're basically paying extra for a warrantee that they'll do 1066HMz.

The equivalent Black Dragons to what you linked I suppose would be:
    800MHz: Newegg.com - GeIL Black Dragon 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory
    1066MHz: Newegg.com - GeIL Black Dragon 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

Quite a significant price difference, and I suspect not an enormous performance difference. If your budget is tight then I'd go for the 800s. Good luck.

Personally I go for the product and the support.

I found for me in the UK, that Ocz rma turnaround was a week. That included me shipping the memory to Holland, Ocz checking it in and releasing a replacement from the US and getting it to my door. The greatest amount of time was taken with my shipping to Holland. I think that turnaround is very fast.

It's all down to personal preference though and what support oiptions you have in your part of the world for a given product. I'd rather buy my second or third favourite on a "wish list" if the support side of things is better than my first product preference.
    GA-P35C-DS3R Rev2.0 F11 bios, E8200 (@3.0Ghz), OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 Reaper 4GB (@1200Mhz), Xonar D1, 8800GTS 512, Corsair HX520 (Single 12volt line, Max 40A), WDC 3200aaks/5000aaks in AHCI mode, Vista 64 Premium.

From what I read, the only real advantage of 1066 is more headway for overclocking. The lower latency at 800 will be more benficial than the higher speeds.

    DDR2 800 for me.

    Thanks.

I hope this will give me more headroom in overclocking so I can pass 400FSB.

My aunt's coming here soon and I was wondering, If I order it today and ship it to her in Florida from newegg, will it reach her before she leaves Florida? She leaves on the 9th.

I'm not sure how the shipping moves around up there. :(
