    Default EP43-DS3 freezing WinXP start

hi there, I built the following system two weeks ago:

    EP43-DS3
    Dual Core E5200
    GB HD4670
    2 x 1 GB A-Data Vitesta EE 800MHz
    500GB WD SATA
    250GB Seagate SATA
    multicard-reader and usbhub in USB
    PSU Seasonic 430W
    WinXP SP3

The first issue is that WinXP freeze during startup just before showing the log-on screen. The display goes blank and I have to reset the computer to boot normally. Then it always works well after the HW reset. This happens only when starting the computer after switching it completely off (switching off UPS unit, which I do to save those 20W it consumes when plugged into electricity).

Second thing is that I would appreciate a suggestion how to setup BIOS for decent OC once it is stable on default. I have upgraded after 4 years and I am a bit confused by the number of new BIOS options I am not familiar with from my previous pc (P4). Now I run with everything on default.

    Thanks a lot.

Sounds like you may have some voltage issues. If it is all in Auto then that is likely why

Post me a link to your ram and I will give you some optimal stock settings to see if this helps with your issue

For now, here would be most all except your ram as it will be a guess without a link

thanks a lot for quick and comprehensive reply, it is a wonderful forum and you personally do great job!

the link to my memory modules is
    A-DATA OC Offical Website

btw, is it normal that the computer consumes 20W when swiched off? it is about 12W if the PSU is off by the switch on its back side, still quite a lot...

    thanks

Hmm with the PSU Switched off you should have no draw of power, is your PSU maybe faulty?

Here would be timings for that ram >>>

    tRP'...........................................4
    tRAS..........................................12

thanks for immediate response once again, amazing

as for the power drainage, I found the same issue reported on different forums (not in English) but with no solution proposed to that.
It should not be a faulty psu, because otherwise it works perfectly, maybe it is just a characteritics of some psu types (I have Seasonic S12II-430, which is generally considered to be very good in that power range). I also read something about "false power drainage" read by wattmeters, which should be related to some capacitors or some filters in the psu, but I did not understand it fully and it did not sound convincing to me. Nevertheless, I will be fine if I can switch the electricity off with the UPS and not having that problem with freezing WinXP at the same time.

I am currently not in front of that machine, will test the recommended setting later and let you know

Ya, it could be the PSU, some do keep a 5v Line open for Mouse, ect to be able to wake the system. I never knew it could be like that switched off manually though, but it could be normal

About your ram voltage question, 1.9-2.1 is the warrantied range. It wont normally need the full 2.1, they just rate it that way because/incase some board does need that to run. You will likely be fine and stable at 444-12 with 1.9-2.0

hi, i used your recommended setting and it works! but i have to test it after the pc has been switched off for longer time, it took me some time setting the values in bios and I suspect it could be also related to overall temperature (kind of "cold start" with cars:)

that's it for now, I will probably bother you later with OC of that system if I may... I realized from the other OC'ers that average OC with E5200 is around 3.4-3.6GHz, so it will be my target.

    many thanks

Great to hear you are up and running! Ya, 3.4-3.8 is about a normal for that CPU, more can be done but at much higher voltages then would be wise I think. But some chips do VERY WELL so you will just have to see how your chip is

Post back anytime if you need some more help with things

hi, so I confirm it works even with the cold start :) Thanks.

    which parameters should I adjust for getting to 3.4 - 3.8 ?
I am currently running with your recommended setting for default (see above).

Why stop @ 3.8. Go for 3.9 . I want to push my e5200 to 4GHZ + But I'm suspecting my RAM won't let me. The e5200 is a great chip and a great overclocker! You can do what I did and drop your multiplier to 10 and start upping your FSB from there...

From 250 until you reach 380 and satisfied. ( Go higher! )

You have the RAM and I would love to see the headway you can make with an e5200 with the 800mhz RAM before I purchase mine. :)
