Default need some helpful advice about overclocking q9550 with x48-DS5

gday. ive just got into overclockin and atm im running the stock cpu cooler and overclocked to 3.15ghz. idle im running 47-60c on the cores, when i play call of duty or another fps with graphics running high they maxed to between 60-75c. would i be better off downclockin to 3ghz or are these temps still alright? im using 1.22v cpu volts also.

another question i have is what fan would you guys recommend to replace the stocky? i have a backplate on my motherboard also. and ive never changed a fan and heatsink, i understand you just turn the knobs on the fan and slowly take out the fan/heatsink and then reapply the compound and put the new heatsink and fan on? or is it a bit more complex.

any info would be great. thanks guys!!

Ya, I would clock down a little or see if you can lower your volts any for now. That is about the top range I would say is safe for 24/7 use.

Once you get a better then stock cooler you will be able to go MUCH Further, so start saving for sure!

I would recommend ThermalRight Ultra 120 if your case will hold it, or a Xigmatek 120 Rifle (HDT-S1283) cooler maybe or a Tunig Tower 120. There is plenty of other good coolers though, hopefully someone else will chime in and help you in choosing. Main thing to keep in mind is make sure it will fit in your case

Ya, it is about that easy, you just remove the old Fan/heatsink and clean the CPU off, replace the paste and put on your new cooler

If you get a new cooler and need some tips or info on putting on the paste let us know and we will post you some links

thanks alot for your help, i have an Antec Three Hundred case. ill have a look at those coolers you recommended :) i just had a quick look at the board, how hard do you have to turn those knobs? i was using a decent amount of force and couldnt get either or the 4 to budge, any special technique or am i just bein to cautious?

    thanks again

There is either push pins which you would need to squeeze together in the back or screws, look on both sides and you should find out how it comes off.

It is normally screws if there is a stock backplate and may need NB Removed first (Crazy Cool, is that what your board has) If so it is in your manual how to remove it >>>

    1. Unscrew the three little screws near the CPU socket.
    2. Unscrew the Northbridge screws.
    3. Remove Crazy Cool plate.
    4. Replace screws with the ones provided with the motherboard and reattach Northbridge heat sink
If that is not what you mean, please post a pic of front and back of the board for me

ah thanks, theyre push pins. i just cant get to the back of the board. ill have to take all the cards and motherboard out to get to the back. i was just hoping you could twist the push pins and pull them out, obviously not!!

thanks for your help lsd :)

Ohh, ya you will have to remove the board from the tray! Sorry I did not know you already installed it.

What you could do if you want when you do it is cut a large square out of the center of your tray with a dremmel that way you wont have to pull the board next time you want to change anything like that

i just took the board out, changed over the fan and heatsink. bought a Noctua NH-C12P, had alot of good reviews and got it local. i can get my system stable oc'd to 3.4ghz, but anythin over that im struggling to get stable.

    im running
    Gigabyte GA-X48-DS5
    Intel Core2 Quad Q9550
    4gib G-skill DDR2 PC2-6400
    Saphire 4870's in crossfire
    Noctua NH-C12P CPU cooler
    Antec Three Hundred Case

this is the first mild-big oc'in ive done, and like i said i can get it stable at 3.4 but ive seen alot of people run at 3.7 but i cant get it stable!!!
    thanks mate :)

That is way to many Auto's!

Please do post your exact settings (Go look) and I will advise back, and for sure set your own ram voltage

What you need to do is see what is unstable... Run Memtest86+ for 5-10 passes and it you pass then you know you need more CPU Voltage or something else is off.

    PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100]
    C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
    Performance Enhance_____________ [Standard]
System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ cant remember, but its set at 848 << This matter and I do need to know what exactly you are using because even though it is less then stock speed it may be on the wrong strap and cause you errors for sure. I need to also know your FSB which you left out (425/429 right?)

    PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [Normal]
    FSB OverVoltage Control___ [+0.15V]
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.225] << may need more
