Default GA-P31-DS3L + hd4870x2 fsb and boot issues

Hello, Using the system below with a PCI vga I have 3390mhz Orthos stable overclocking just raising voltage and fsb.

mobo: GA-P31-DS3L (F10 now but also used F9)
    cpu: E2160
vga: HD4870X2 (3DMark has poor score but ultra stable)
    memory: 2GB AET760UD00-25D (Memtest86+ tested up to 900mhz)
    http://www.aeneon.com/Portals/0/Pdfs...ED_REV1.01.pdf
    power supply: Modu82+ 625W (+3.3VV 24A, +5VV 24A,
    +12V1V 25A, +12V2V 25A, +12V3V 25A)
    hard disk: 5@7200rpm

    The problem:

    a) Since I have inserted the hd4870x2 (works perfectly btw) there is a total fsb wall at exactly FSB 333mhz and no matter what I try, even detaching hard disks and fans, I cannot get past it and the max clock is 3000mhz (Orthos stable). When I try to get past 333, I hear three beeps, one short, two long which seem to indicate a "video card problem", the screen is black and I have to reset via jumper.

    b) Searching on the web there is people with different mobos and q6600s overclocked (@3.2-4) + hd4870x2 on 620hx or 650w psus. So I don't think it is a power supply problem. And there are reviews showing (Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L Review Page 21 - Overclocking - Overclockers Club) that this mobo is a good oc'er.

    I would like to know:
    1) Is this definitely a motherboard/P31/bios limitation that occurs when my specific 4870x2 card is used? Is there some chance to get past 333fsb tweaking bios settings or not?
    2) If I bought a quad core Q6600 would I be able to overclock at least to 3.0ghz (333 fsb x 9) OR i would get issues and maybe a wall even lower than 333?

That board does not support PCI-E 2.0 fully I think is why you see low scores. Can you please download and run this and post a screenshot so we can be sure you are at least running at x16 >>>
GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility

I am not sure how far that CPU will go as not many use it, but a quick google search as I am sure you have done would tell you. I do see what may be your issue with a seemingly 333 FSB wall >>>
    PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [auto]

You should first off always have that set to 100 manually when overclocking, and as you seem to hit a wall.... Try going past 333 with that manually set at 100 for now. It it does not help your issue at all, please try 101-105

    Is this just 2x1GB?

You should also make these changes for now to be sure they are also not holding you back >>>
Static tRead Value_______________ 6 << Set to 7-8 for now
Static tRead Phase Adjust________ [0] << Always Auto

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [+0.1V] << Maybe try +.15-.2 if you do not have .15

And of course, these should definitely be disabled >>>

CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)................: [Enabled] << Disabled
    C2/C2E State Support....................: [Disabled]
    x C4/C4E State Support..................: [Disabled]
CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2) ...........: [Enabled]
CPU EIST Function.........................: [Enabled] << Disbabled

Thanks for the reply. Yes the memory is 2x1GB. I have recovered my previous CPU overclock (3390) and can boot it at 3400 and run benchmarks perfectly.

Then I lowered the cpu multiplier to 8X and the ram ratio to 7-8xx (ram can reach 910 ok) and started looking for the highest possible FSB (table is below).

I cannot get past FSB 378, bootable only if PCI-EX clock is 111, or else I get the three beeps at boot (pci-ex). Also setting pci-ex clock more than 111 = three beeps.

Obviously I tried various voltages, even giving +3 to everything doesn't help. Too bad...this board achieved FSB 400+ in one review.

Having to raise the pci-ex clock so high to reach just 378fsb seems to be a sign that my hd4870x2 and the bios/motherboard don't get along well when the fsb is raised.

hmm..I would like to submit this fact to the bios developers, so maybe the mobo/vga compatibility for high FSBs could be improved in F10 final bios.

    FSB RAM PCI_EX
    342 8xx 100
    343 8xx 101
    348 8xx 102
    350 8xx 103
    350 8xx 103
    352 8xx 103
    360 8xx 105
    367 8xx 110
    370 8xx 110
    378 8xx 111

    * I have checked gpu-z and it says PCI-E 2.0 x16 @ x16 2.0, crossfire enabled ( 2 gpus).
    * Do I risk component damage by using 111mhz PCI-e clock?

P31 is a budget board, and you are likely lucky to get what you have out of it. Yes, you will damage your SATA Drives and possibly your cards at anything over 105. Over 110 for sure damage is getting very likely

You need a MUCH Better board for that GFX Card anyway, get you a P35 at least and you will have much better luck
