    Default GA-EP45-DS3L Freezing problem

    Hello all, i'm a brand new user of this forum, humbly asking for help

    i've got a weird problem with a GA-EP45-DS3L, updated to the F10 bios.
    The other components are:

    CPU: E8500@3.16 GHz
    Ram: OCZ2P10664GK 2x2048MB
    Video card: XFX GTX260 Black Edition
    PSU:-Enermax Noisetaker 600w
    OS:- XP Pro SP3

    After assembling everything, stock cooling, stock speed and leaving the MIT as it is (well, modified Performance Enhance to standard), i installed windows and all went fine. I didn't do any test like i normally do (like memtest) before installing because i wasn't expeting to run into any problem.
    Problems appeared when i tried to run full screen video, games and screensavers... after some seconds everything froze, needing a reset or poweroff, thought it was a driver issue and the driverfest begun. Nothing changed. Reinstalled windows. put in the essential drivers and retested. It freezed.

    So i detached the hard disks, took the memtest 2.11 cdrom, loaded fail safe defaults and started from there.
    Memtest freezes after a variable time between 3 seconds and 9 minutes, but freezes no matter what.

    I tried every possible configuration of dual and single channel, with 1 or 2 stick of ram, changed slots etc. tried conservative timings, underclocked them from 1066 to 800, tried overvolting of the mch and dram in almost every possible configuration but nothing.
    Memtest still freezes, asked for help on the ocz forums, and i already did almost anything they could have told me to do, but tried anyway.
    No joy.

    So I swapped ram with my brother, mines work flawlessly on his rig, so i brought home his OCZ Value PRO (OCZ26672048VPDC-K) sticks.
    The ram is different, different timings, different speed (clocked at 667) so i tried them stock speed, and the problem was still there.
    I tested the 667 rams in the same way i did with my kit, and there's no way i can make the system run, it freezes like it froze before.

    In the end i even tried overvolting the cpu a bit, just in case it undervolted like the 8500 of my friend did on his pc, but to no avail.

    Very time consuming and frustrating.

    For the record, the temps are 37C cpu and 40C system

    Now i'm writing here because I think it's a motherboard issue, because even the slightest modification of the MCH voltage breaks everything.
    Overvolting it a notch makes everything freeze at post or when entering the bios to reset the settings.
    Undervolting it just a little makes it go in a reboot loop without post screen, i can tell it's rebooting because i can hear the fans going to max then falling silent in an endless loop.
    The same thing goes for dram voltage, upping it over 2.0 causes almost the same problems occurring when overvolting the MCH.

    Are there tests i can still run in order to pinpoint the problem?
    Or a set of settings for the MIT that is proven to work with the ram i have?

    Did you by chance use Express Install off the Motherboard CD? If so, you likely loaded The Gigabyte RAID Driver and you did not need to. Please go into Device manager and uninstall anything you see in Storage Controllers that says Gigabyte or J.Micron SCSI.

    What settings are you using that are failing, with either ram? Please do link me to your ram, and use if for now if you have it. To see if it is maybe just a driver issue as I thought above try with one stick of ram only for now if the issue is the same it very well may be a driver issue, at least for the within windows issues you are having. As for Memtest failing, sounds like some incorrect settings for sure since your ram is ok on your brothers machine.

    Some overvoltages will of course fail at stock or if other corresponding things are not set properly. As for your MCH Voltage, that should be adjustable without issues, but you may have some other voltages you took out of auto that may cause issues with that.

    So let's see what you are trying to use for your settings >>>>>

    Please disable Legacy USB Storage Detect for now first so you can rule that out as a issue

    pc power&cooling 500watt silencer

    Im having the exact same problems with running full screen video, sometimes it even locks up with regular applications. Usually happens when a lot of applications are running. My system as well is running at regular temperatures

    30-40C cpu and 40-45C system

    sometimes ill get the bsod when playing games, and or it will say nv4_disp.dll stopped responding and just leave me on windows desktop screen with out any drivers loaded in like 8bit color.........

    I have a feeling i just need to know what MIT settings need to be tweaked because this board is for advanced users as i came to find out. Normally i have been a Asus guy and just plugged and played most everything. Well i have never had to mess around with voltages i should say.

    we need help here GENIUS'S!!!!!!

    Hello Lsdmeasap, thank you for your reply.
    As for xp&drivers, I abandoned every attempt with it after the reinstall, because when i saw it freezed with just a fresh install and the 4 essential drivers (intel, nvidia, realtek sound, realtek network) I went back to the basics, so i unplugged the hard disks power cables, inserted the memtest86+ 2.11 cd i've burned (downloaded the iso from Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool) and started testing from the ram.
    Every test i did with the bios settings where after this step, and memtest freezed everytime.

    Anyway, back to your requests.
    The memory kit i've currently in my pc is this one OCZ DDR2 PC2-5400 / 667 MHz / Value Pro Series / 2GB Dual Channel
    it's my bro's and we know it works without problems.
    My 1066 ram is his pc, 20KMs away and i can't obviously swap them on the fly ;), so the Value Pro kit is the one i'm gonna use for the tests with you.
    For simplicity sake i'm quoting the specs from ocz's website:

    With these settings i'm now running memtest86 off the cd.
    I've tested with the modules in the orange slots, then swapped places. As of now the dual channel tests failed, freezing.
    I'm now testing with a single stick on, it's a slow process so i'll report the results of the single module test when finished.

    Gmoney, before i started testing with memtest, i saw some bsods involving nv4_disp.dll too, so just to rule out memory and bios settings problems(and before running head on into the drivers&co cluster****fest) i'd recommend to burn the iso http://www.memtest.org/download/2.11...+-2.11.iso.zip on a cd or cdrw given its tiny size... there are floppy and bootable usb stick versions, just use whatever you prefer, but use it, coz being sure the ram & bios settings are alright will save you a lot of time. I'd rule out the wattage problem, because your psu seems quite adequate to the task. I used this calculator http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp and with your config you get around 209W (i checked this for my rig too before asking around the forums, because the freezing problem can be energy related)

    Ok tests finished.
    Every test with a single module goes well, memtest doesn't freeze and it completes without errors.
    So i thought maybe it was a dual channel issue, and i put in the other module, in a different coloured slot.
    Did 3 test like this, changing places, all failed.
    There is no way to make it work with these settings with two modules installed, either in dual or single channel configuration.
    Well, at least now it seems there's a pattern of some sort.

    Ok Lsdmeasap, i hope this can shed some light on my problem, any idea about what to do next?

    Did you test each stick on by one? Just not sure by the way you commented about your tests. Why also are you running your ram at 667? You tested it at spec 1066 right, if not you must do that to be sure it is not faulty

    Set everything on auto but ram voltage and perf. enhance and test one stick at a time at stock speed of 1066 (you would need to set 3.20B ram multi though)

    Ahh sorry I reply as I read!!! So this 667 and 1066 set you feel both fail at dual channel then eh? Your board may be faulty then?

    It would be nice if you had your 1066 sticks as well. So you tested one stick in each slot too and it failed? Even at stock optimized settings with no changes but performance enhance?

    If so your ram is either not compatible or your board is faulty I would think

    I had the exact same problem when I built my system using the EP45-DS3L board and 2x2GB memory. With both memory sticks, the system would freeze 1 minute after boot. With 1 memory, stick it would freeze 10 minutes after. I found that dropping the MCH core voltage 2 ticks made my system stable. The auto settings were overdoing the voltage. Try running with one stick of memory and knocking down the MCH voltage until memtest passes, then add the other stick and repeat til they both run. Hope that helps.

    Hello Lsdmeasap, sorry for my being so confusing at times ;) anyway yes the valuepro kit clocked at 667, and yes the sticks worked when used singularly, in every slot.. so this morning i had a hunch, i've read many posts with this kind of problem and anybody would reach stability LOWERING to 1.05 the voltage of the mch..
    just like FTB did reccommend :) thank you FTB, that's it.

    That is very counterintuitive and contrary to popular belief lol.. maybe it should be made a sticky thread for ds3l owners...
    anyway, after that the value pro stick worked flawlessly in dual channel, so i swapped it back in my bro's rig and now i've got my 1066 2x2048 sticks.. .here's the link

    So Lsdmeasap, what are the settings you'd feel confortable to configure the bios with in order to make this ram stable? after the stabilization maybe we could go up oc'ing, but for now i just need it stable to "break" it a little.

    2x2 is going to need you to raise your MCH Back up a bit, try stock 1.1 then 1.5 and see if that helps

    As you know I recommend 1.2-1.24 for 2x2GB since you found stability at lesser voltages with 2x1 due to MCH issues then you may not need so much for 2x2, but you would still need a increase most likely.

    I would need to see all your settings to best advise, but for sure you should set your ram voltage to spec, set your own Static tRead Value, and be sure you set tRFC to 52-62. Aside from that for now Auto on the rest may be ok until I can see what all you are using.

    Do be sure though if you are running stock FSB that you manually set your ram multi to 3.20B for 333 FSB

    Hello Lsd, yesterday night (VERY late at night) i found a stable configuration for my 1066 set, all the while keeping the mch at 1.05 ..
    i don't feel it's the "optimal stable" yet but at least we're ashore now... Kept memtest runnign for 3 hours or so, then i decided it was stable enough for my current needs.

    Running another memtest now, just one pass at 100% then i'll try some windows stunts, let's see what happens.
    Meanwhile if you can review and suggest something about these settings i'll be very thankful.
    Did you think about making the MCH @1.05V thing a faq for the EP45-DS3L? I think it would save so many users so much time it should be rewarded sexually.. too bad we're almost all guys
