    Default OC issues: GA-EP45-DS3L & E8400 to 4.0GHz

    I've got a pretty new build I've been working on overclocking for a week or so with mixed results. I managed to get the system stable at 3.8GHz without raising the CPU Vcore at all, only upping the FSB and MCH core voltage. Since crossing that line, stability has rapidly decreased with each upping of the FSB. Currently I'm sitting at 4.0GHz with a not-quite stable system I would like to stabilize a bit. Prime95 will run small FFT indefinitely, but will fail the blend test at around 2 hours each time. Memtest will run indefinitely. The computer is stable at low load but will usually crash while playing games about an hour in, on average. I've tried tweeking voltages and timings bit-by-bit but haven't managed to make it any more stable. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here's my setup:

    --A few notes:
    - At factory speeds, I had to drop MCH core V 2 notches to get the memory to run stable.
    - Raising the DRAM voltage to 2.1V results in crashes, but 2.0V is more stable that 1.9V, which will still boot.
    - CPU runs at ~52C on full load

    Nobody has any suggestions? Could it be my RAM can't handle the FSB speed? Or is it a NB issue?

    Hi, sorry can't help but I have very similar setup & problem with you except that I can't exceed 4ghz (or fxb exceeding 420hz) no matter what combo of cpu/fsb/ram I try.

    I was hopping to find solution also, I'll let you know if I can be of help later..

    MCH stock at 1.1v , tried increasting to 1.2v and 1.3v
    PCI-E at 100mhz

    Cooling: Zalman CPU WB-03 with 750L/hr pump + 8cmx24cm radiator 2x12cm fans + aluminium reservoir
    EasyTune reports Cpu at 21c and system 29c ambient room temp is 20c.

    O/S is Win XP Prof. SP3

    @ FTB
    Try Driving strength 1066. What Static tRead is being used?? That could very well be the issue. I would also suggest you try 1.22-1.24 MCH Voltage

    @ James WHC, Please give me your full settings that fail for you and I will advise back >>>

    I've tried 1066 driving strength with no success. Upping the MCH further than 1.2 only seems to lessen stability, but I might try that again. Previously, too high a value led to lock-ups after boot. Channel timing settings look like this:

    I tried 1066 driving strength and 1.24V MCH and Prime95 blend test failed after 45 minutes, so no luck there. If static tRead is the key, how might I adjust it?

    I have tried upping the static tRead values and it only made the system more unstable. I am going to try to lower them, but I have read that the higher the FSB, the higher static tRead you need, so won't this be a dead end? Is there something else i should tweak in unison?

    Dropping the static tRead to 9 and 10 doesn't seem to have helped either. Based on my numbers, is there a point that I can up all of my voltages to in order to stabilize the system, from which I can start dropping them individually to test for stability? My strategy so far has been to raise the FSB and then see what else I have to tick upwards to get stability, but clearly I have back myself into a corner somehow.

    What Vtt are you using?

    Are you trying to get the memory stable or your CPU? You should work on one at a time first, best thing being memory first. Testing with Memtest86+ until the ram is stable, then if Prime fails you know you can leave the ram alone and work on CPU related voltages
