Ok so I tried doing intel burn test with 8 and 12 threads at max and the computer locks up but if i drop down to very high it passes fine...

im going to prime blend over night but until then i would like to get things dialed in enough to pass ibt on max...

    hmm

    Several thoughts:

    1. Lower FSB to 490MHz and see if stability improves.
    2. Disable LLC and increase Cpu Vcore as necessary. With higher cpu voltage, raising Cpu Termination (VTT) might help with additional stability. I don't recall seeing setups with LLC enabled at such a low Vcore setting.
    3. Reference Volt settings might need to be set a bit lower. Did you follow the procedure in ** How to setup CPU/MCH GTL Ref Voltages Vs. EasyTune ** to set the reference voltages?

I've run IBT with threads = 4 with my C2D systems (stable), but the performance results were much worse than with threads = Auto or 2.

    Better GFlops with 2/auto threads?

Why are you testing with threads = 12?
GFlops dropped from 27.6 to ~22.2
Test took ~ 3x longer with memory = 6584 instead of 4096 KB

Not really. This will always happen with more threads than cores. The system will "waste" more time in context switching and cache thrashing will probably occur also.
Idealy the number of threads should be the number of cores, virtual cores too if HT is available.

is ibt more than just a stability test? is it a benchmark as well? i cranked it up to max to try and generate the most "work" or heat to see if my new bios settings could handle it..

the system just primed for 3hrs on blend... and i plan to run a 12hr prime over night...i just want to try a few more memory settings now that i think i have my vcore set to where it needs to be...

It may be both. Too low GFlops may indicate the need for more Vcore.
I don't know if you will be able to use tRD(Static tRead Value) 9 but you'd probably be able to lower tRFC to 56-58 or even less with a bit more DRAM Voltage.
This may not effect IBT results but try Super PI Mod v1.5 XS, and of course memory benchmarks, Everest has one, or MaxxMEM² - PreView.

EDIT: to compare differences of IBT results always use the same amount of memory and number of threads(or auto).
