Question SpeedFan: Question CPU Temperature Versus Core 0-4 Temp (Q9300)

    Hello all,

I am looking at speedfan's readings and I noticed that it shows my cpu temperature and all four cores temperature as well. How is the temperature different? My cpu is running at 32 degrees, at idle, while the cores are in there 40's to high 50's.

Does anyone know what the core temperatures should be at idle and when running a full load?

Try Realtemp Real Temp - CPU temperature monitoring

Follow the forum link on the above page, to find the latest up-to-date beta.

Temperatures vary from PC to PC, depending on the type of HSF you use (Cpu Cooler), to Case Airflow, to Ambient temperature, to if EIST and Enhanced "C" states are enabled in the bios.

As a rough guide, with say average case airflow, a stock cooler (ie the hsf that came with the CPU on PWM auto)) and an ambient room temperature of say 20C.

    Idle (in Windows), <35C
    Idle (in bios) , <40-45C
    Load (In Windows) <60-65C

The core sensors are not acurate for idle readings, only under load. This is per Intel white papers.

For acurate load temps, make sure the monitoring software is set to 105c TjMax, the proper setting for a Q9300.

Thanks guys. I am running air cooling but I have a Zalman HSF on the CPU. Fan can spin upto 2500rpm. Real Temp is giving me the following temps.

    Idle:
    49
    49
    46
    46

I see that they have a section that says "Minimum Temperature" and "Maximum Temperature" so I would assume that those what the min and max the core temps should be for my Q9300 right? I want to OC a little but I am nervous, lol.

If you are using the older version of Realtemp v2.70, it may not have the now correct Tjmax information - hence why I suggested the beta above.

I'm not sure what Tjmax is for the 9300 (and series), but as above vick1000 suggests it's 105c. If you can't find the latest beta of RealTemp then you should be able to manually alter Tjmax (if it isn't correct) in the program itself. It should state too what Tjmax it has defaulted to.

Basically Tjmax is a threshold where the CPU will start to take measures to protect itself from thermal damage, by throttling back etc
Because Intel only needed a "Countdown" to this Threshold, little regard was given to the sensors giving an accurate reading at idle to mid temperatures. If you think about it, theres no need. Accuracy improves majorly as you get into higher temperatures ie 55C+ and of course the closer you get to this threshold.
So the utility software used to interpret temps is usually quite innaccurate at low temperatures and thats where RealTemp comes into it's own. The author has taken RealWorld temperatures (he's measured) and compensated in the software for the inaccuracies at low temps.

So basically there is no Proper linear temperature monitoring facility on these chips.

Wow that is very interesting! Thanks for the information. I'll have to check out the beta.

Whoops, it actually 100c, been a while since I looked at it.

Ok so in Real Temp I have to go into settings and set the "TJ Max" to 100 for all 4 cores and not 105? Reason I ask is that I saw on the web a few also saying 105.

    Yes, it's 100c...

I thought it possibly was, as other 45nm CPU's such as the e8xxx series are at a Tjmax of 100C - that was with the latest Intel disclosure.

This is the link from the RealTemp support forum here:-

The above Beta should include the Intel Tjmax update.

    Edit:-
Some recent info from the RealTemp author in regard to Intel's statement/information on Tjmax.
