1:1 is the emory multiplier, as is 3:4. In the BIOS, 1:1 is 2.00. Read this thread
Okay, so will going 1:1 give me a better performance?
I read the referred post and table - to get 1:1 I'll have to reduce my RAM to 800MHz (instead of 1066). I am not clear of the benefits to have 1:1 ratio.
Thanks for the info on USB storage, I'll disable that and maybe get a faster boot time.

Hard to explain in one post. Research is the way to find answers. I have read several articles that show that exceeding 1:1 does not really give that much benefit, as the bandwidth from the CPU becomes saturated and can't really keep up. However, there is nothing wrong with having the memory at other dividers to achieve whatever gain can be had, as long as you remain stable. as you raise your FSB, then, obviously, the memory strts to go faster. If the memory speed gets too fast and becomes unstable, then a lower memory divider will get the memory speed back in spec again.
That's all I am going to try to describe. Use the search function. You will learn much more that way.

Funny, if you noticed throughout I didn't mentioned the word stability... with everything I did so far - the PC booted very stable, no problems at all - just a little increase in idle/load temps.
Anyway Capt ,thanks a lot for the clear explanation. I did try to search for this explanation but all I found was an even more confusing description... yours made more 'simple-sense' then all others.

I think that for now I'm set with my OCing, I found that with 400 fsb and no voltage manipulations my E8400 CPU keeps cool, stable and at 3600MHz. As to the RAM - I got it to be 1066 as it should @ 5-5-5-15 and minor voltage tweak from 1.8v to 2v. Runs very smooth and reasonably fast for me. I'll let it grow on me before I'll try to tweak this CPU any further (to 4GHz).

    The best that go together.

What's the latest BIOS being used for OC'ing? I see F9 has been out.

Still on F7 here. I'm not experiencing any problems, so I'm reluctant to upgrade the BIOS.

You pull off 4Ghz or higher and stable yet?

To be honest I haven't been able to devote the time I want to going for the 4.0. Now that the summer holidays are here I'll check it out.

Cool. I certainly appreciate what you do and that you are sharing it. Be great if you can hit 4.5. I tried but no luck. However, I don't know how to tweak what's necessary very well either.

Just curious. I remember some setting having to do with Virtual Machine, or similar. If I'm going to install Virtual PC 2007 do I need to have this enabled and if so will this cause any issues with OC'ing? I thought it was recommended to disable this.

    Anyone? (8/5/09)

Also, anyone update to a later BIOS? I think 9 is out now.
